I have been frequenting tj for almost 20 years and just recently I had my first problem at the zona. I had parked my car in a nearby public parking lot and was walking a short two blocks to AB when about a block away I was stopped by what I can only describe as a crack ho that wanted to shine my shoes for a buck. I politely declined but she went ape shit on me! She tried smearing shoe shine polish on me but I began to run from her. I looked back and she was chasing me while screming profanities so I decided to stand up to her by telling her she was about to her her sorry ass kicked. Bad idea. She stars calling for help and screaming that I'm tring to hurt her nearly catching the police's attention. Fortunately for me I was right in front of HK Bar by that time and went in and that was the last I saw of her. Be carefull out there!

I don't usually partake in the alley girls but like to wander around looking at the eye candy and seeing if I see someone I'd like while they hiss at me. The thing I've noticed in the past few months is the quantity of girls are down in the alley. There seems to be a lot more open space along the sidewalk than in the past. I haven't read of any recent mugging reports here or elsewhere. Sure, there were the reports of the "chineros" robbing mongers in the zona a few months ago. The relative calm now is probably due in large part the the significant police presence in the area now. In the ground zero area of Adelita/HK/Chicago and the alley behind AB/HK it is safe as a trip to Disneyland. The rest of the zona is going to be more dangerous, but that was the case three years ago, or ten years ago.

The cartel violence is centered exclusively in cartel versus cartels or cartels versus police/military. A lot of the Americans that get waxed in Baja often turn out not to be perfect little angels and had their hand in the drug business. I used to play in the land of Los Zetas and Golfo Cartels and learned long ago that if you stay away from their business, you don't have a problem.

The cops are not the thieves they were before. The increased police presence in the zona is not really a concern for the monger that is just down to TJ for fun. If you drive, the cops are writing a lot more tickets and if your papers aren't in order they could impound your car. They're enforcing other traffic laws as well. When the taxi driver dropped me off last night he actually pulled ahead several feet because there were cops around and he was afraid of getting a ticket for double parking. The best bet, as always is take a taxi to the zona.

Comparing TJ from three years ago, it's about the same if you ask me, especially in the alley where the SGs still ask for $20 dollar or 200 pesos.

I would say the prices from three year has gone up a little. Before the asking price was about $60 dollars, and most BGs would take $50 dollar. In Tropical the all the girls ask for $70 dollars, HK at night has been $80. I don't ask in AB, but I bet most ask for $70 dollars too? ( correct me if I'm wrong?)The good thing is most BGs will take $60 dollars, and now since the exchange rate is so favorable, many mongers use pesos for even a better deal, like 600 pesos.( in the past usually the cheaper SG mongers used pesos)

Sadly there is more reported cartel violent crime reports in TJ, however that type of crime is never in the "Zona Norte" where the bars are located. There are a few reported muggings taking place in the zona, and has been reported in the local newpapers. The new mugging reports seems to indicate a MO with a female decoy luring an unsuspecting horny mongers to her hotel room or divert the attention of the monger, and then the rateros move in for the mugging that sometimes involves choke holds.

However, the good news is TJ cop shakedowns are way way down, as that use to be the number one concern three years ago.

Because of the recession I also notice more bars are offering 2 for 1 price beers, all day and night, where before they stopped that after "happy hour."

If you ask me, TJ is as safe as ever personally, because just like three years ago I almost never ran into trouble, and the last two years it's been about the same. I go to TJ have a good time, and come home as safe as could be.
