hiya everyone i am a 47 year old and am about to begin my reflexology training in september..i am very nervous and am scared that i will not be able to retain all the information..esp the A&P any tips for me bear in mind that i am peri-menopausal and have no brains at the moment !!!

Hi Hazelflower

As someone of a similar age who has just completed her reflexology training I can say you'll love it! Although saying that, I've got my AOR exams coming up next month so at the mo feel my brains are about to explode with all my studying! It does get harder as you get older there is no doubt.
All I'd say is keep up with the work and try and keep on top of the case studies - we had 60 to do and from experience the worst thing is to get behind.
I feel dead proud of myself for doing the course and you should too.
I'm sure you'll enjoy every minute, you go girl!

Hi Hazelflower, i'm sure you'll be fine. I sympathise as I am also suffering with my hormones and I also have problems retaining information but despite this I passed so i'm sure you can do it too. As long as you are willing to put in some work, even if you have to work that little bit harder than someone who's not perimenopausal and is blessed with a naturally good memory.

I take ginko and fish oils when I study and both help me to concentrate and focus. Start taking the fish oils asap as they can take a while to kick in.

Good luck and enjoy the course, it is hard work but it's interesting and that always helps.

thank you squirrell and thanks for the advice about fish oils i will get some and start taking right away..i need all the help i can get..i have just looked at some of the past papers and it lookjs like a foreign language to me right now.

I too am your age, and have those little memory gaps that we ladies of this age tend to have. I have a few therapies under my belt so I am used to studying, although just had a year out. I am starting reflexology in September as well.....hold hands shall we

Hello Hazel, Delores, and Fleur...I'm pushing on 43 ( ! ), and also have similar short term memory lapses/ info retention shortages...and I'm a bloke, so don't worry !! Lol !!

Hi Hazelflower

I just finished my ITEC holistic massage with A&P and one of the smartest people in the class was a 62 year old woman. She loved showing us that she new it all and had no problem with the A&P whereas I who hadn't studied science in the last 17 years couldn't keep up.

Good luck with your course I'm sure you'll be writing back that you loved it so much your going onto something else.

Hi Hazelflower,
I did my reflex course in my mid forties, I have many senior moments now and do have a memory problem anyway linked to CFS but I coped on the course better than I expected. Maybe you need to look into a way of retaining info, you know, do some study skills before you start if you have been in education recently. People learn in many different ways, you need to find yours and put it into practise. Also keeping the body fit and exercised can keep the mind on top form.
I didnt particularly like A & P but I knew it was necessary for the course,the more you are interested in something the easier you find it.
I am sure you will do fine we all have these nerves before hand. Take it one step at a time and enjoy it and dont be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
What course are you doing? Good luck for the future and the same for Ant Man Bee. Would be interested to know how you both get on. Take care

Hi there. The A & P exam isn't as bad as you might be thinking. When I was studing reflex/A&P 4 years ago, I got lots of help from healthy pages on the exam forums. I managed to find lots of test questions and wrote myself out pages of mock exams. It did the trick! Hang in there, it will be fun and interesting and I am sure you will pass with flying colours! Don't forget that age is only beneficial because you are choosing courses you WANT to do and you have the benefit of wisdom behind you!

Best wishes for your course as I have just completed my course and I am now 47 when I finished it! Did A&P and VTCT Advanced Dip Level 3 in Reflexology at the same time 2 evenings a week! Tough going but really enjoyable and am now looking forward to treating clients. Also going on some advanced 3 day courses to keep my skills up and learn new things!

I too am of a similar age to you all and have the odd senior moments though i try not to own up to them.
I am doing reflexology by correspondence done the first module, not too sure if it was a smart move had to do it that way due to work commitments, hey presto thinks now changed and am now starting ITEC holistic massage in Sept. am really looking forward to it though to me the A&P is my worst nightmare. so could i be included in your group would be good to keep up with how we are all doing and jog each others memories oh and will be getting the ginko and fish oil thanks for the tip

Hey, don't forget that there are blokes as well... I'm in my early 50s and have just completed my A&P exams and will be starting reflexology in October. I'm looking forward to it. In my A&P group there were 3 others of our age and they see it as an opportunity for career change - to what they really want to do!

Good luck with your course you'll really enjoy it!

Very good advice from Delores... don't get behind with the homework/assignments/case studies 'cause that's when it get's tough . As soon as you do a case study treatment write it up while it's fresh in your mind.

Another tip is, find out exactly what the tutor expects from the case studies. Find all your volunteers and start them as soon as your tutor says you can. This will give you a head start so you won't feel under pressure and you'll enjoy doing the treatments more.

how is it all going for you...i started last weekend and loved it !!! althought im totoally terrified...trying to remember all that A&P and reflexolgy routines as well !!! the sequence is just not going in yet i keep forgetting things..even the relxation part...is anyone lese finding hard? oh can anyone help me on this i found a crunchy bit in the lung area of a practice client i was using..she has no obvious physical causes for this...what else could it be????

Hiya Hazelflower,

I had a last minute change in plans and am not following VTCT route at college, I have a tutor teaching a few of us from her own home, she has taught VTCT, BTEC etc in the past and is currently tutoring foundation level in holistics I think. I have already done A&P and H&S but do need to brush up. I am finding it very interesting, but not pressured to be honest, but am happy that I am being taught to high standards, Possibly better than my aromatherapy and IHM was at college. There has been quite a heated debate going on in the last few weeks about short courses, V college courses etc, but so far I am happy with it.
