Alcohol advertising ban

Look like the alcohol advertising ban is going through,

No more Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand then. Also heard that the reason for it being delayed was the recent Johnnie walker classic in Phuket, but now after the tournament they decide to enforce it.

I can't see that rule affecting bars or restaurants in Patong etc.

Don't govt's mainly do these things to try & avoid under age people from taking up drinking?

No, it doesnt affect nightlife here, just feel sad if I cant visit any more major golf events here. Johnnie walker sponsored 4 events in Thailand since 1998 if I remember correctly, two in Bangkok and two in Phuket.

It does affect advertising companies.Know of a friend that just lost 2 major accounts from San Mig & johnny..

Closed bars - no problems - except external advertising will need to be removed, but for beer bars ....

"The restrictions on advertising also cover any object used for advertising purposes, such as umbrellas and coasters, that display the logos of alcoholic products.

"This includes open-air beer gardens. They can sell beer but without displaying the brand logos," said Mongkol, adding that the ban will not apply to pubs and closed areas that serve alcohol."

Just got an email from ROSSO, evidently they have received communication from the government on this issue and have to pull the advertising sponsorship on our Tuna Yahct and Guppyquarium, which is a real fecker as that was developing into a nice little income stream.

Dman better cancel that order for the new noodle stand!!!!

this is a fcuking disgrace.........a great golf tournament that many went to see is to be cancelled...it bought a lot of xtra dosh in to los....it makes me sad.........

Heard they had signed up a few girls from Soi Bangla, who are working on it as we speak.

Its a pain in the backside and a real shame IMHO. Same Same lots of other events that I used to be involved in (Not golf obviously....Before Dodger says it)

Tetleys, John Player Special, Benson & Hedges, Johnnie Walker, Embassy and lots of others I can't recall right now (i.e. Smoking and drinking) have all had to pull thier sponsorship of some great events.

Embassy used to sponser coarse fishing in the UK which is obviously not for the super fit and athletic but the point is that at least the sponsorship went down to those who actually use the product. i.e. I used to love a smoke while pulling out a few roach on the Rochdale Canal with the chance of winning a few bob at the end of it. Ah well, lets hope some tour events find thier way back to Thailand........It will be a shame to see them go.

I am willing to put my 'Guppyquarium' up for graps in the Mai Thai Grand Tuna Challenge..........and no, Dodger, just coz you caught a couple the other week doesn't mean you can come down and lift it.

Read this could be a WTO violation. A non-tarrif barrier against lesser known foreign brands.

And the advertising ban is supposed to reduce consumption, particularly amongst the youth....

But, it has been argued by the alcohol producers that banning advertising will only reduce a producer's ability to differentiate themselves from competitors. Absent branding, the best way to compete, will be to lower their prices (and they can because there is no more ad/sponsor bills to pay), leading to MORE consumption.

Maybe they should just put pictures on the alcohol bottles/cans of hemmoraghed livers, drastic vehicle accidents, people puking/p1ssing themselves, etc.. like they do ala cigarettes, which I read reduced consumption by 20%...

Don’t really have a problem with a ban on alcohol ads (or cigs for that matter). My country’s had it for years. (Not that it has stopped --- or even slowed down --- us Norwegians from drinking, mind you).

But (with regard to "censoring") some of the Thai movie channels on UBC have gone a bit over the top as of late. Of course, they blur (or even entirely cut out) the nudity. Fair enough.

But… then they blurred people smoking, then someone putting a gun to someone else’s head and then people drinking a beer. Latest one I saw was blurring two people kissing?!!! (Reminded me of the last scene from Cinema Paradiso BTW. Oh, nice to see that Ennio Morricone finally got the recognition he so thoroughly deserved.)

Anyway, to get back on thread, not really concerned about the ads, but more disturbed about the censoring of artistic material.

I guess it will stop the promo items in the bars as well. i.e Beer coolers, lights, the jack daniel flyers they put in the soi's.

Will it really make a difference? Does anyone have any stats on how it's affected other countries that have taken this stance?

Though you may have read it somewhere, I have a very hard time believing that cigarette consumption is down 20% because of the pictures on the packages. Mostly I see people making jokes about them - hey they are not scary they are conversation pieces. Plus, after you've seen them you just ignore them. Plus, the pulling of advertising of cigarettes in 7/11 etc has not had any impact on me, just like setting my watch ahead 5 minutes doesn't help -- who are they trying to fool?

I've just given up on trying to understand the Thai logic behind so many issues like this one...it's like you take logic and facts and through them out the window, then make a decision based on face or graft. Banning alcohol advertising must give the Thais "face" somehow.... or somewhere maybe the boys in brown are going to profit from "fines". Crazy days.
