until SARS is under control. The Health Organization in Ont is already looking at the worst case scenario. MP's are the perfect places to spread it. Imagine how many others one carrier can infect. Do you want to infect your loved ones, parents, co-workers? You will regret it for the rest of your life.

It's a *potentially* nasty vector, but it is also very much in the interests of everyone involved to NOT have a spread of SARS this way, to quarantine people early...
After all, on the part of the MP, it would be *really* bad pubicity (oops, spelling mistaek) to be a vector, at least for places where reputation is of any importance. And nobody makes any money when a quarantine is on, nor if there are 10 MPAs on respirators at the hospital. Even if an MP is run by scoundrels with what amount to "sex slaves," it is not in THEIR interests to have customers in the hospital, or girls sick *or worse*. They often depend on not really being noticed; being a source of 20 cases of SARS would get them "noticed" by all the wrong people.
I would personally steer clear of places that *aren't* normally noted as being clean, as habits that are normally "poor" can lead to bigger trouble in this case. (The EBC place noted for offering "far too many extras" would be a good example...)
Personally, I caught a cold this week; I'm pretty stuffed up right now. When the symptoms started coming on, it was not initially evident whether it was "just a cold," and I would certainly NOT be interested in generally publicizing it if it had been SARS, and the vector had been Studio B. (While it's possible I caught a cold from someone there, it wasn't SARS, and it's as possible that the conduit was elevator buttons in my apartment building.)
But during the time when I was thinking "It *might* be SARS," the thought that it could have come from an MP visit did not fill me with joy and gladness...

According to the medical profession, SARS will last for months or even one to two years. In one medical clinic alone in TO, three doctors caught it and they are all in some kind of ICU with respirator support. This tells us the actual meaning of the term "close contact".

I would be exercising extreme caution when I visit my regular MP. I will personally clean the face-hole with disinfectant and may even bring my own towel.

Afterall it is strictly your choice whether you will see your dentist, have your haircut, visit your local bar, see your MPA, or even going to work. All these are "close contact" one way or the other.

The MSL programme intends on taking King Dongs theoretical belief that SARS might be increasingly spread by visising MP's and making it false. In order to do this, one must see every MP in the GTA and NOT get inflicted with SARS.

Visiting every MP in Toronto and coming out alive is...well, *sigh*...hard to....*hrmm*...even THINK about....*...but it MUST be done for PURELY - SCIENTIFICAL research.

Wouldn't the "worst case scenario" be everyone gets it; everyone dies?

I'm sure they are looking at a whole range of scenarios, and there is doubtless some scenario that is the "worst case." In fact, any time anyone might consider two scenarios, of differing severity, they are considering some sort of worst case scenario.

This doesn't concern me any more than would a claim that half of Ontario students get below-average grades. It is totally to be expected that half the students will be "below average," just as around half the students will be "above average." (... The more precise term would be "median," not "average," but hopefully those that weren't too far below average will get the point...)

I'm not trying to minimize the need to act with some thought; it's just that saying they have considered a worst case scenario! and pointing at that as a need for specific action is a leap into hysteria.

I'll bet the Americans have had people make up military strategies surrounding "worst case scenarios" involving Quebec separating, and turning into a rogue terrorist state. Some idiot hears about this and concludes that the Americans are therefore itching to send in an expeditionary force to conquer Canada, when reality is probably that this was a task given to otherwise-bored mid-level officer/analysts. They doubtless play out a lot of simulations of "worst case scenarios" that are a whole lot worse than anything current SARS predictions involve.

This subject has been talked out! We are all aware of the risks, if I dont want to risk it I guess i could just stay home and stay clearly away from my hobby, but then I would also would have to stop working/banking/shopping/interacting with the public.... I think you are over reacting.

It is interesting to view from the states issue about SARS in Canada especially in Toronto - someone from our office went to Toronto a week ago or so and told me 60-70% of the people were walking around with masks and no one was having contact with anyone - - Is that possable? If that is somewhat true, SP's and MP must not have a lot of traffic - - hmmmm - - special deals, see whomever I want whenever I want and SP's and MP's having low contact with people means less chance of SARS - - might be a good idea to head North!

You're serious? He said that 60-70% of the people at your company's office had masks?!?! I'm out and about in the city every day, and I haven't seen a single person wearing a mask yet.

I don't understand all these massageplanet.netites that have EXTREME concerns about getting SARS at MPs and SCs. Yes, SARS appears to be easily transmittable, but before this SARS scare freaked out the whole world, there was a whole fucking bunch of shit that wasn't SARS you could have got from going to a strip club or massage parlour. Why fucking worry only about SARS? How fucking careless were you before SARS?

How's this, next time you go to see an MPA, bring two masks, one for you and one for the MPA. If the MPA asks you if you're worried about SARS, just say "No baby, I just want to play doctor with you."

I saw half a dozen people at the grocery store wearing masks yesterday, which was more masks than I had seen to date outside of TV reports.

Virtually all those I saw in masks were over 60; there's apparently greater fear amongst the elderly. (Which is not inappropriate; they are more likely to die if they catch SARS...)

SARS can make you sick and kills so quick you may not have a chance to draft your will, buddy! There is also no known treatment. So it is more than 10 times worse than when HIV first appeared. You might remember how people changed their behaviour when HIV started to spread.

Just to add some perspective: the overall recovery rate of SARS is >90%. The deaths so far were largely in elderly patient with other underlying diseases. The reason why it is hyped up is due to the media attention and focus on deaths.

Influenza kills 2,000 people a year in Ontario (mainly elderly with other illnesses), but where is the media hype on this? Where is the thead about not seeing MPs due to possibility of the flu?

I am not trying to suggest SARS is not deadly, (as it is), but remember that a lot of the attention is fueled by media sensationalism (eg. when the war first started, it was 24/7 news coverage, but not it is no longer front page news)

I was trying to explain what make people so fearful of SARS. It is NEW! It's a real rapid killer that is communicable which we still don't know how to treat. That's why many people automatically avoided a number of public places like restaurants, shopping malls etc out of fear of the unknown. People simply don't want to die. Call it irrational, you be the judge.

Sure, a large number SARS cases recovered (thank goodness) but many had once been critically ill. That means these people could die if they did not receive the best available treatment in hospitals in time (ventilators etc). The public health officials WORLDWIDE have been taking EXTREME measures but are also trying to be reasonable.

I agree there is some sensationalism in the media reporting. But they are also spreading the information including helping educating the public. The extreme measures that are in place now (closing hospital units, delaying surgeries) are not normal and cannot be sustained. Only time can tell how nasty this bug (we were told it is a new form of common cold virus) really is and when we can begin to relax.

Until then, each person has to make his/her own judgement as to how cautious they should be.

Good points Yuppie and Roadrunner - - Do you think this has diminished SP's and MP business? It would seem to me that if a SP or MPA is hacking and feels warm to the touch, leaving immediately would not be out of line - - but then again, it is probably too late since exposure has already been given. Makes your head spin.
