Anatomy Coloring Book, which one?

Ok so looks like there is more then one of these. One by Margaret Matt & one by Wynn Kapit,Lawrence M. Elson. I am going on vacation to Montana next week right before I start school and thought this might be a fun thing to play with. But which one  is the popular one and also any tips on how to use it for learning purposes? I know that sounds really stupid, I do know how to color. I mean are there certain color schemes laid out or do you just start in?Thanks

Anatomy Coloring Book, which one?

Is there one that your school recommends or requires? If not, I used the Kapit/Elson book, and really liked it. It gives you coloring tips and guidelines, as well as a plethora of information about physiology and anatomy. In fact, some of my medical student friends have used that same book.However, I just saw a new coloring book in the store the other day by Joseph Muscolino. I think it is called The Muscular Systems Manual Coloring Book or something along that line. "The Muscular System Manual" (the text, not the coloring book) is my favorite anatomy book, as it gives muscles both individually and in groups. It also gives a lot of info about how to palpate different muscles, and extra tidbits of stuff such as mnemonics for muscle groupings. The coloring book seemed to be along the same lines, but I only skimmed it.Best of luck starting school!!

Being from the same fine institution as palpable, I "grew up" with Kapit/ Elson. In fact, I've been using it recently to review for finals and the NCE. It's a great book.I've seen another anatomy book by Muscolino, not a coloring book, but based on the one I saw, his coloring book is bound to be pretty good.There are some recommendations for color choice in the Kapit one; typically they do that so that when you go from one diagram to another on the same region of the body there is some consistency. I found coloring to be really helpful in learning. It helped me get used to the shape, size and location of whatever I was coloring, and, strange as it might sound, caused me to form a sort of bond with the diagram...."hey, I made that line drawing all bright and cheery!!" Anything that works, right?

The wynn kapit coloring book is the best for two reasons. One  - it is the most anatomically correct. Two- most importantly, it groups muscles according to function. All TMJ together, all rotator cuff together, all scapular stabilizers together, etc.It is far easier to learn muscles according to their functional groups, then it is learning them as separate entities. One can then use the "ALL except techniques":All the rotator cuff muscles inert onto the greater tubercle except subscapularis; All adductors insert onto the linea aspera except gracilis; all TMJ muscles elevate the mandile except lateral pterygoid,; All quads orginate from the femur except rectus. On & ONOr just the ALL techinique:- all the deep muscles of the spine extend and laterally flex, all the hamstrings flex the knee,  all the quads extend the knee....... on & on.The Musculino is an excellent book - but I do not like the pictures - poorly drawn.

I know its not a coloring book but its still a great book. Atlas of a Human Anatomy by Frank Netter. He is one of the best anatomy illustrators. It is well worth the money.Trish

Anatomy Coloring Book, which one?

Thanks everybody,I just went to Barnes & Nobel and got the Kapit/Elson. I got the Trail Guide a few weeks ago and find it very entertaing as well.

I have the Kapit/Elson coloring book as well and feel like a kid!  I started off by using colored pencils then didn't like how they looked and switched to fine point markers.  I couldn't use just "any" markers..I had to find the best ones for the job.  Even bought a cute little pouch to carry them in.  When I sit and color I feel great!I'm thinking of making flash cards as I go through each page.  I've bought a bunch of colored cards and a little binder to keep them in.  I thought it might be easier to make them one page at a time instead of going back and making them afterwards.  Any thoughts?Thanks.Cindy

Anything that gets you recreating the muscles seems like it's a good thing to me. We had an exercise in anatomy class where we drew in muscles on 8 1/2 x 11 pages showing bony outlines (hip, femur, tibia and fibula for example) and labeled them with OI &  A. I learned a lot from that exercise.I know what you're saying, Cindy. It's like going back to early childhood, coloring with passion and intent. It felt fantastic to remember the simplicity and yet the "importance" of it!
