Anchor Bar, Kata

Last night I was down at the Anchor bar in Kata, and it was very full as they had a professional snooker/pool player there. As far as I know, Jimmy White was meant to be there but he didn't turn up, but there was this other guy.

Was anyone from here down there or does anyone know the name of the guy who was playing? He allowed people to play him for 1000 baht a game, and you had to break and you got 4 shots (which carried) from the break.

So if anyone knows the name of this guy can you let me know? Also I was told he will be playing at the No Name Bar tonight in Karon.

The guy was about 5'4, had a bit of a belly, and smoked a lot. Someone said his name was Jelly Belly. Nice enough guy. Also he does reside in Pattaya - according to his Thai Gf/Wife.

I actually was the only Farang to beat him all night. While I was there (up until midnight) 4 other people had beaten him (Thai) all night at 1k baht a shot.

So he did well, I estimate he made 30k and I heard he left at 2am.

I have seen him before, I am positive of that, and no hes definately not Knowles.

Maybe I will play him again tonight at No Name.

I just got a message that I will be playing Jimmy White tomorrow night at a private residence, so I am excited about this!

Ollie Reed must be near the top of the list. Got me paralytic one sunday morning in my mates garden shed! They were opening bottles of gin and necking them...neat :-(

5555...that was funny considering my last post. Went down there, expecting a snooker player, but the guy is/was a pro pool player. I had one game against him. When I told him my name, Rex, he said "my dads' name was Rex, Rex Williams (7 times World Billiards Champion). I know! My name is Holt, but he was sh@gging my mum!" Then he asked where I was from, I said Guernsey and he says " so you must have known Ollie Reed!" me "yes", "and Alex Higgins", me "yes again!". Told him about Ollie getting me p#ssed.

He was giving a 4-shot start which sounds generous and it was but you can also see how it works in his favour as the opponent always breaks first and clears a lot of balls and then he steps in and often clears the table in one visit or lays some really difficult snookers. I didn't beat him and when I left around midnight he said he was 11 games in front. Not a bad way to make a living. Said he lives in Thailand 6 months of the year and whenever he needs any money goes out doing these challenges.

Glad you had a chance to play him. What you say is exactly true and thats how I beat him, from not sinking shit from the break. I only sunk 3, then i potted the white, he sunk my next ball to get position on his. He then sunk only 2 of his balls before he tried to snooker me, which he fouled. I then cleared up my last 3 remaining balls and the black.

He is a damn good player though. He seemed to be a nice guy, and his wife/gf is pleasant to talk to as well.

Hopefully I will give you a quick report on Jimmy tonight or tomorrow, as long as it all comes to fruition. Did you see anyone beat him? As you said, he lets them clear up, then all he does is clean up, and play safety shots if he is in doubt. But seriously, if you have 4 shots you should clean up, but its very rarely happens, because of the extra pressure.

Glad you had a game and hope you enjoyed it. Did he say where he would be tonight?

Yep, that's him....so you can see he's been doing it for years here. When I got there he beat a couple of Thais, then a farang stepped up and won. Then he won 2 more then a Thai girl beat him clearing the table...he didn't get a shot. He was giving boys 4 shots...girls 5 shots. Then he won 2 more then lost to a Thai then it was me. So I'd seen him lose 3 times before my go. He got me by laying a couple of really difficult snookers when I was down to 1 ball.

Reading that other thread someone said with a 4-shot start the challenger should win just about every game and I would agree if it were on a small table with big pockets and big balls but this is on the bigger tables; small balls and pockets.

I don't know where he is tonight. There's supposed to be some snooker players doing it at the Offshore bar in Patong tomorrow night.

I thought they were playing Monday in offshore, which has a very good team. It was still a good experience for me playing against him, I feel my confidence and calmness has grown, not so nervous. Although I would like to play him once more.

In Anchor, he was giving the girls unlimited shots, until they fouled and he lost against one woman, but of course, I wonder how he would play in a proper game without the 4-shot advaneforum.xxxe.

The celebrity dinner is tonight at Graceland Hotel, then hopefully I will get to play with Jimmy tonight, but who knows until it actually happens.

As far as I know, Jimmy and Dave do play together, and I read it somewhere online as well, that they partner up to practice.

I was looking for a photo of him online, but I can't find one anywhere.

I hope you had fun playing him, and yes hes a bastard when it comes to snookers.

Just from watching a dozen or so games I learnt a lot from it seeing the way a pro works out a plan. There were times when I thought he'd missed an easy pot that even the dog under the table could have got but when I thought about it what he had actually done was deliberately push his ball near the pocket without sinking it and more importantly put the cue ball in a really tricky position for the opponents next shot, so the challenger would then make a hash of it and Dave stepped up and cleared the table.

Found this from 2005...see back then he was giving away 5-shots!...maybe he's not quite as good now as he once was!>>>
The OK Corral bar in Soi Rungland in South Pattaya recently played host to Dave “Jellybaby” Holt. Holt, a World Snooker Championship competitor and self-professed top-class pool player, offered to give up a 5-shot handicap to anybody willing to play him for a consideration involving those big grey currency notes. Holt has been in Thailand since November and was staying on Koh Lanta on December 26, the day the tsunami struck.

Holt clearly had a misspent youth in his hometown of Birmingham. He gave away five shots for Bt1,000 and seven shots for Bt2,000 in a series of games at the OK Corral. OTT can report Holt suffered just two defeats and walked away with a substantial bulge of cash in his trousers.

Yes I saw that, but I was thinking that it may not be that he is not as good, but everyone is getting better, as it is more popular now. I remember watching a snooker game and Steve Davis was commenting on how the talent is a lot better now a days than it was when he was playing.

Standards generally do get better in sports, as people have more access/time to do them as well as learn from reading/watching.
