any one been to tj this week?

was there 10 days ago. ab was crowded and pretty expensive. everyone asking for 60-100 bucks. hotel was packed, no rooms for overnight stay.
chicago was dead. hongkong seemed to be crowded.
getting pesos at the boarder is a great idea. it makes a difference.
thought it might be a good idea to stay in AB and hotel until day light to be safe and it worked out.

Right now we only have a drop in tourism, which isn't TJ main focus, and the zona has seen only a small to moderate drop off in customers to the zona.

There has always been a lot of poor people running around in TJ. I don't see how it's different now? There is only a perception in the financial markets that things will start to really get bad, and they may be right, but I don't think it has happened in the streets yet in TJ?

Just got back from Coahuila and it was business as usual. Did hear of 5 dead and 15 wounded at a bar in Otay....sure the story will be different tomorrow, but still not nice.

Well, Brethren, I was just down yesterday and enjoyed a memorable afternoon with mi favorita. However, I do have some negative news to report from her. I have no reason to believe she is trying to over exaggerate or sensationalize as do the media outlets. She says that she and her friends and neighbors are certainly concerned about the drug wars going on but realize that, unless they are very unlucky, will probably not be affected by them.

But what is starting to seriously concern them is the deteriorating economic situation. She says that there are more and more desperate people in TJ who are taking to thieving just to stay alive. She compared it to the rampant crime in Mexico City. (She's from Sonora and they have a dim view of Mexico City.) She went so far as to warn me not to come to TJ at night anymore.

You all know that I have always agreed with the consensus on this board that the dangers of TJ are vastly overblown by the media. But I do want to let you know that some of the locals are starting to get very nervous, not only of the ongoing drug wars but also of the general crime rate getting out of control because of the economic downturn.

I was down there last Sunday, same as it usually is on a Sunday afternoon. I don't want to sound too optimistic but it really seems safer than ever to me. With the drug war raging and a quarter of the TJPD sent off for "re-education" or in hiding from the Federales there are a lot less policia to hassle you.

I'll go back tomorrow or Sunday.

I made it down to the Zona Norte on Wednesday to talk to a few bar managers about a party. It must have been 8:30 or 9pm and very slow. I'm going again in about 20 minutes, but don't plan on staying long. My wife is too tired to go tonight, so I will come home quick as I have a couple of things to do.

Well like I said I made it to TJ last night, and as usual very quiet as of fears of violence. In fact I think it's even safer than it ever was. I never seen robberies before, but I use to see lot of cops pulling gringos over in cars and walk outside the zona. I don't even see that anymore. I did see two cops at the taxi drop off point but they were minded their own business by the taco stand.

Because of the economy, passports, and crime stories TJ is a little bit less busy, although AB, HK, and Tropical were still pretty busy. It's sad that Chicago Club is dead, and La Tropa was closed. Again TJ was very quiet, and peaceful...the mongers there had no concerned, like me it was all about fun.

Since the peso is so weak against the dollar and I'm suffering just like everybody else, especially in my 401K and other accounts I exchanged some of my dollars for pesos. I think I got 1336 pesos for my dollars, and later exchanged my money back at about 1280 on Articulo 123 and Niٌos Héroes. Careful some of those money exchanged give you a bad exchange rate according to Sampson and others on Articulo 123 off REVO.( the banks or ATM machines give you the best rates)

I guess it was SG night for me. I started off with two SGs who were friends and one I did before. I missed last week but was down the week before --just before Halloween. (Definitely need to visit this week.) It was fairly quiet. Far fewer mongers and chicas -- but still plenty to choose from.

Also, there seems to be fewer truckloads of Federales cruising the streets. I have a bit of paranoia with regard to them since they seem to carry their weaponary non-chalantly and I've seen firearms discharge accidentally in the past.

Like Fireballs, I believe TJ is no worse than any other urban jungle I've lived in or visited -- as long as you are not in the illegal drug trade or a high-profile, high-net-worth individual.

I haven't been to TJ since Halloween so I'm due to go this week, but not sure which day as it will be as work permits.

But when I was there a couple of weeks ago, it was safe, when I was there last year it was safe, so I expect it to be pretty much the same when I go there this week? As far as mongering is concerned it's always the same. I'm rarely if ever brothered by the TJ police. I have never been mugged, need seen a kidnapping, or a drug lord....The only thing I see is a bunch of over weight mongers in bars looking to get laid.

Now there are others here that live in TJ or go everyday, and I doubt if they are scared either? The only scared ones are guys that read the papers who never been to TJ or rarely go to TJ.
