anyone starting school in April 2006

I am starting school on April 4,2006. I am very excited and very scared at the same time I heard on the 2nd day we start massage and in 1 month we start clinic! How crazy is that, I am going to National Holistic Institute in CA. The 10 month program about 720 hours. Any advice from anyone & is there anyone who is starting school in April like me?

it's not uncommon to start hands-on very soon after starting. it's going to feel funny to stand correctly, perform each of the strokes, and generally do something that seems completely foreign to you. it'll take about a month to get comfortable with it, then you'll join the clinic and it'll seem like old hat.

Thank you for the welcome, Mush, and the encouragement! At my particular school, we were required to spend one full day(14 hours) on-site before classes begin. This was a big help in getting an idea of what to expect all the way around. On my day there was one other prospective student, and we spent the entire day going into massages that were in session, or working on each other with very basic manuvers. By the end of the day, we were providing basic hand and feet massage for clients, while the instructor did the rest of the massage. While it was a little surprising to be working on real people that quickly, it sure has helped while working on the distance education portion of my classes, and watching the dvds our instructor provided. Our hands-on instruction begins on April 10th.

We started doing massage on day one, too! Total immersion is the best way to learn! You will have a great time. I loved going to massage school. Other than raising my kids, massage school was the most fun I've ever had in my life!!

Akdragonfly you have to let me know how your first day goes. I'm not sure if my hours are considered accelerated or not? I'm doing 720 hours in 10 months, well tomorrow is my first day and I have butterflies in a good way! It is exciting and scary starting off to a new path of my life. I will let everyone know how it goes, By the way I think everyone that comes on this site is great and I am glad to be part of it and look foward to getting to know all of you! :

I would LOVE to go to NHI, if I could but find work in the Bay area. But I'm stuck down here in Los Angeles County, earning just enough to get by. I'm still working on funding for the schooling, but I could start in April, if I'm successful in the next week or two.

Caoimhan, which school are you thinking of attending? I'm heading to the open house for IPSB tonight, it starts at 7:30pm in Culver City. That school is looking to be a good fit for me, and its payment schedule is a little more forgiving as well. Four payments of $275 and one payment of $250, stretched over 12 weeks..

Well everyone, I actually had orientation on Tues and yesterday and today I have been learning Shiatsu. Oh my god!! we are learning shiatsu (traditionally) on the floor. I can't get over how much I have learned in two days. It is amazing (learning massage)but my body freakin hurts. I can't wait until next week hopefully by then I won't be so sore. I have to start working out just so I can strengthen my lower body and become more flexible!!! Other than the whole body hurting It has been a great experience I have practiced on family members and my mom had told me that I actually made her hips feel better : that makes me so happy

It's official! I filled out my application form for classes starting on the 23rd, the IPSB folks are going to meet with me to tell me about things I'll need to bring to class, etc.

Interesting, Backrub. How many hours is that program?

Edit: I found their site. I'm assuming this is $1350 for their 150 hour "technician" program. While that's not a bad price, and the payment schedule is nice, 150 hours doesn't get you very far. They claim it's enough to let you practice massage throughout most of California, but this is misleading. From what I've been able to research, most municipalities require quite a bit more.

I'm probably going to end up going the South Bay Massage College. They have a 325 hour "base" program for about $1700. (This includes 150 hours of internship at their spa). Plus, they have a total of about 1000 hours of instruction available through additional electives. Those can be taken one class at a time for about $9-$10/clock hour. Being able to break up the study while I work my "day job" will allow me to get the 500-600 hours I need to take the national exam in about 6 months, and reach 1000 hours in about 12-15 months.

Yeah, my research has shown the same. I think I only have one city around here that I can practice in with only 150 hrs of training, and that's a Maybe...

As it turns out, I went to the open house at IPSB to see what kind of vibe it had, and it was a VERY warm, nurturing atmosphere. The teachers did offer to help with finding a job after only 150 training hours if we wanted to do that instead of going on to the 500 program, though I'm set on doing the 500 anyway. I was just hoping to start letting my school pay for itself after the first 150 hours :? oh well! Doesn't change the fact that I'm veryvery excited finally doing what i've always wanted to doooo.

First week finished

Today was day 7, first week finished! It has been a very busy week, and I am tired, but it is a GOOD tired! We learned so much this week, and our group of students is super. Our classes run from 7am-7pm Monday thru Saturday, except we are going to be putting a few Sundays to get some extra anatomy classes from a special instructor. It is grueling(LOTS to learn!) to say the least, but we are one happy bunch of people! Our instructor really knows her stuff, and she goes all out to make sure we learn correctly. Today I participated in four massages, and one body wrap. One day off, then it is on to week 2 (there are 8 weeks, by the way, we will have 500 hours of hands on and 250 of academics).

I love your Benny!!!!! I have a blue and gold macaw, Jessie. Regarding the course, yes, it is hardcore, that is exactly what it is, very challenging, and about the fourth day all of us students were discussing how we had felt skeptical coming in (can we really learn what we need in 8 weeks?), but after 7 days, we are more and more excited, because we can SEE what we are getting, and all feel very fortunate. Our instructor doesn't mess around, she knows what we need and she has designed the course for it. The confidence the group has as a whole and an individual has grown amazingly in just seven days. Our instructor reminds me a lot of the type mentorship that was between the Karate Kid and his mentor (remember the movie?). Very much the same type thing. She is training our mind and our body. I am impressed, and at age 47 I am very hard to impress.

Graduation!

Graduation is almost here! I passed my hands-on final, just have a couple of more days to finish the hours requirements, and then get the license needed. It is has been grueling, but fascinating, and we sure learned so much! I know I am just a baby crawling, but I feel like I am on a neat journey....
