Has anyone out there had any experience with clients with autism? I have a nephew that is about three and was wondering if anyone knew what modalities may help the condition. Thanks for your input, you guys are all great!

Autism is a tricky condition in that each one reacts differently and generally has various other conditions in relation to it.Generally speaking my experience with autism is that the individual is hyper overloaded with sensory imput from their surrounding environment. Most of them...unless conditioned early, cannot stand to be touched. It's just too much for their already sensitive systems. Though often they will do what's called "self-stim" which are repetative bodily movements that they often get quite preoccupied with.I used to work with the develpmentally disabled population prior to this profession, and worked closely with an autistic male for almost 5 years. He was one of the lucky ones who had a very loving and affectionate family and thrived in his home place environmnet. His mother used to rub his back frequently and he liked being touched - up to a point. He did not like others coming up to him to touch him unless it was a mutual thing and often repelled from sudden touches from less known people.But to those who were not as lucky and fell prey to the grossly inadequate system, suffered greatly and often fell hopelessly into their own secluded and isolated "inner"world - often acting violently towards it in their inept ability to relate constructively to it.There are various degrees of autism and some are better able to relate to the world around them. It is important to observe how your nephew conducts himself with his family  and be willing to explore different modalities that might be beneficial. The above links might give you a better idea - I never had the opportunity to offer massage in that particular setting.Best wishes, and keep open to how your nephew responds to different modalities. Autism is very person-specific.

I have always had a soft spot for the autistic, though I don't have much link-wise to share.

I will add a few things that are not necessarily massage related, but may help in one way or the other.  You may already know about them, but if not, then maybe they will help.

This first link, I found today when searching for "Tomatas", but it really only mentions it once.  I read, looking for the info, and instead was struck by a few other leads, that may be of help to you.  It ends up, I spelled Tomatis wrong.

Autism

Dr. John Upledger has used CranioSacral Therapy with autistic children for quite some time.  He has written several books that discuss a variety of cases and differences CST has made for these children.  I know when I read through his Inner Physician book several of the cases he wrote about struck my heart.

Thank you everyone for your quick responses. I feelings were that cranio-sacral could help his situation and that of his older brother also. I was some what surprised about the food issue links, I will have to explore them further and let my sister know what they said. If you have any more thought please post them, I will be keeping a close eye on this one! THanks again!
