What's with the water-filled mattresses? I'm assuming they are like giant Fomentek bags or Grandma's Water Bottles?

Whats water weigh?? Seven pounds a gallon I believe. Large formentek bags hold about 3 gallons I believe. These bags Aveda uses are about 1 and a half times as large as formentek extra large bags. If they hold even twice as much water, that would be about.... 12 gallons. 12 gallons would weigh roughly 84 pounds. Even if you had a client who weighed 300 pounds, you have less than 400 pounds on a table. Most tables can hold 500 to 600 pounds.

lol I consider water to be HEAVY!! 21 pounds in a hot water bag? No way would I use that on my clients. Getting 84 pounds of water onto a massage table sounds like a job for anyone but me. And I don't mind doing outcalls. Go figure. :roll: Water in a bag isn't exactly obedient.....As a client, I would not want 21 pounds of anything placed on my back, either, but that may be because I am claustrophobic. :?

I'm back - trying to imagine, still. Does this thing have an electric heater attached, or does one have to fill it and reposition it on the table each time? I absolutely adored my wamassageplanet.neted and would love another someday, but it was such a PAIN to empty and move!!

The aveda water bags dont go on top of the client. The aveda bags are meant for a client to lay on face up the whole time. It is like getting a massage on a water bed. The client doesnt need to turn over, the MT massages the back of the body by sliding their hands between the client and the water bag.

I understand that. I was back to the large fomentek bag when I talked about having it on top of me. You said the large one holds 3 gallons which is 21 pounds, and having that on my back would drive me crazy.

I don't have a problem with their existence or others using them - it's just something there is no way I would want to bother with.

I'm sure Golden Ratio or Oakworks or someone (that sounds reaaly sure doesn't it?) had a table called a Mermaid that worked this way.....

I did the Hydrotherm training in England whist working in a spa. Two bags will almost cover the whole table. You fill the bags with warm water from the tap, there's a thermometer guage on the bag. The temperature of the bags does go down a bit by the end of a 60 min massage but an electric heater is not required. The company does make heat pads to keep the temperature constant but it's only worth the expense if lots of treatments are done back to back.

As someone mentioned earlier the client lies on top of the bags, facing upwards and the therapist can slide their hands under the client's body. It's a nice treatment to do with minimum effort to the therapist as client's body weight does the work. The bags can leak if the the top is not closed properly. Plus heavy spa usage will evenutally cause problems with the bags.

Just lying on the bags is very relaxing and soothing. I bought the bags for my private practice and I've been known to fall asleep for a few hours on them - bliss.

Sounds pretty cool... and 2 bags would be easier to fill than just one large one. The pic did come through, and they look very sturdy!

I'm intrigued (even more) now... does anyone know where I can buy these?

We actually used these in school and they are wonderful. The client lies on top of the bag and the therapist actually slides their hands into the sides of the bags. You have access to the clients entire back and their body weight works for you.It is very helpful for people that can't lie prone. You can give a perfect massage without any oil, the client is fully clothed (if you choose), and the heat from the water is very relaxing to the client.

Found the table Golden Ratio http://www.goldenratio.com/Spa/MermaidUplift.html it is heated so no lifting of bags. It's also very expensive and pretty wide.

I've seen a one bag heated water pad you could put on a table too, it was over $500 and the stockist said it was commonly used with seniors, due to challenges turning over.
