...immediately? Getting a good vibe from a potential date, but I want to ask for a phone number to talk to her and get to know her first. Is that awkward if a guy just ask a woman for phone number just to chat? Is it expected to go for a date within a week?

its a great idea to get a number, but just make sure the other person says its ok.

it's fine. i think a girl would appreciate you trying to talk and get to know her instead of jumping right into going on a date and trying to get in her pants. that's one of the things i appreciated about my boyfriend when i first met him.
