Cillian Murphy might have taken home the Oscar for Best Actor last night, but his tousled coif and lit-from-within glow deserved awards as well. Gareth Bromell has worked with Murphy over the last two years, engineering the glowed-up complexion seen at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes; for the Oscars, Bromell wanted to turn the spotlight on the actor’s hair.
Creating a lived-in texture—"easy, nothing too structured”—that would continue to settle into place gradually throughout the evening was key. Bromell started by applying the Sisley Hair Rituel 230 Cream to Murphy’s hair while damp before drying on low heat. He added a layer of the Invisible Hold Hairspray to lock everything in. “You’ll still get the movement, and it lasts all night,” he says.
On Murphy's complexion, Bromell aimed to amplify health. “Skin is always about plumpness and a really healthy glow,” says Bromell. He applied a hydrating face mask to Murphy’s skin before placing CurrentBody’s celeb-approved LED Mask on top to help it penetrate further. To finish, Bromell used a gel cream moisturizer to perform a lymphatic drain massage, locking in moisture while getting blood circulating, which helps to minimize fine lines and plump the skin.
Bromell then applied the Stylo Lumière Highlighter Pen to brighten up the eyes and added a touch of powder to the forehead, nose, and chin to absorb excess oil. “I think the better the skin looks, you don’t need to use that much makeup.” There you have it: A gold-standard look for a gold-statue-winning actor.
