Cleaning the feet?

I was wondering what you all use for cleaning the feet before a treatment? At college we use surgical spirits which i hate! It's so harsh, i'd like to use something softer but not sure what. I have heard that rose water is a good alternative but not sure where i could get some from. At home i have just soaked peoples feet in the foot spa which is lovely but sometimes not that practical. I'd like something that travels better .

Superdrug sell teatree & peppermint wipes which are excellent for cleaning the feet.

Hi, we use surgical spirit too. Suppose you could use anti bacterial wipes instead?

Hi Dixie, my teacher used Lavender water and cotton wool pads and I do the same. I make it part of the treatment and personally think it is less impersonal than wipes but that is just my opinion. (You can find it cheap in Boots).

Glad you've been given some ideas. I use babywipes too, simply because it's the most convenient for treatments. IfI had time and it was practical I'd get everyones feet into a footspa, but then until you've taken a consultation you don't know you can give them a footspa anyway.. catch 22..

Hi Dixie,

All of the above are good ideas, but I'd run it by your tutor before changing the cleaning medium, some don't like you using scented products if you're not a trained aromatherapist.

Plus if you're doing an ITEC course stick to surgical spirit or antibacterial wipesfor the exam - you may have an examiner who is particular about having a nice smell in the exam room

i use baby wipes for me to! practical when doing mobile work, and hygienic when in the treatment room. wish i could find antibacterial wipes tho?? any ideas?? the only ones i have found are for the kitchen!

Hi Periwinkle, I got my anti bac handwash from the £ shop, and I'm sure they had the wipes too (not for kitchen or bathroom) I wasn't sure if I could get these as my list said the gel, and I didn't want to get the wrongitems for college.

On our AOR reflexology course last year, we were told that anything we used to clean the client's feet with had to be anti-bacterial so ordinary baby wipes were not sufficient. Boots do an anti bacterial wipe in a tub but they are very wet and have quite a strong chemical smell. Sainsbury's do an anti-bacterial baby wipe which are quite nice to use, but my favourite are a grapefruit anti-bacterial hand wipe which I get from QD stores. If you have one near you they are usually on the aisle with the furniture polish wipes etc. They smell nice and not too chemical, as they have natural grapefruit in them. They are quite cheap too at 99p for a pack of 25 and because they are a hand wipe thay are not as harsh as using surgical spirit, although you will probably find you are using more hand creamif you use these wipes regularly.

If it's any help to anyone, when my kids were very young and exploring as they do, I used to buy wipes called "sticky fingers" from Waitrose and I think Sainsbury's might do them now. They are about £2.95 and I think from what I remember, they are antibacterial.

We've been told to use anti-bacterial wipes in college. I buy Sainsbury's Little Ones toddler wipes (find them in the nappy aisle). They have quite a pleasant scent to them too, but not too strong!

Well, i have purchased some lavender water from boots this morning (thanks foot wizard!) and as soon as i get to a superdrug i will have a look at those peppermint wipes, they sound lovely. I suppose the best thing to do is try afew different mediums and see which suits me.

I will definately stick to the surgical spirits in college Wesam. My tutor is a bit, mmm, how can i put it, ............................ inflexible!!! Thanks for the heads up x

I keep a bottle of water with one drop of lavender oil and one drop of tea tree oil and use that and cotton wool - this is how I was taught on my course.[/align][/align]I personally don't like baby wipes at all as I find them very chemical. They're also quite cold. I wouldn't use them on my babies either![/align]

At college for ease (and time) we use wet wipes with a splash of tea tree. Occasionally we use hot mits, which are much nicer.
At home I use mitts, dipped in just a bowl of warm water with tea tree in it, or any other oil that you might want to use.
I do know of people that use surgical spirit but to me it just seems a bit clinical.

It does help thanx . Could i ask what mitts? Your routine sounds very personal and i love that. I must admit to being a little wary of using oils because i'm not an aromatherapist. I did look on the internet to see if i could find some guidance on making up my own water so it would be more individual but couldn't find anything..........

Okay so I bought my mitts from Beauty Express. They have a website and a catalogue but I think you could get them anywhere, like my college does some. They were only about £2 a pair and are basically just flannel gloves but without hte fingers. I just have a bowl of warm water and dip them, ring them out and wash the clients feet gently. Normally I use tea tree because it is an antiseptic and can be used neat (on spots) so it is hard to go wrong if you aren't an aromatherapist (which I wasn't when I started reflex).
I do like doing this becuase it is more personal than wet wipes, etc, and the client does get more massage and close contact.
