HAYDEN — After 10 years of working in a chiropractic office, Carly Kauffman has struck out on her own.

The third-generation Coeur d’Alene native has been practicing massage therapy since 2003 and recently opened her own practice within Roots Hair Studio, which houses a collective of independent contractors.

Kauffman considers massage therapy to be an integral part of alternative pain management and customizes each massage treatment to the bodily needs of her client.

“Massage is something I believe everybody should make a part of their life,” Kauffman said.

Kauffman believes that the benefits of massage should be experienced long after the client leaves her office; she also works with clients on stretching techniques and lifestyle changes in order to help them feel their best.

“I don’t like to give people a robe and a mimosa anymore,” Kauffman said. “I want to give a 3- to 5-day feel good, even a 7- to 10-day feel good, and help to maintain your body ... It's really a mind, body, spirit thing.”

To accomplish this, Kauffman combines modern techniques with some of the oldest forms, including fire cupping.

Fire cupping is a traditional Chinese practice that involves heating a glass cup to create a suction effect when applied to the client’s skin. The technique is used to relieve muscle tension and is believed to remove stagnation.

Returning clients tend to have unique experiences each session as Kauffman attunes to their needs.

“What might not work today might be what your body needs tomorrow,” Kauffman said.

Establishing her own practice has allowed Kauffman to expand her services into skincare, which didn’t have a place in the chiropractic office despite her being a licensed esthetician. Her most popular services include the “fire and ice” facial, which is a mild chemical peel, dermaplaning and microblading.

Regardless of the service she is providing, Kauffman’s passion ultimately lies in giving care to others.

“I love taking care of my neighbors,” Kauffman said. “I believe in small businesses and in our small town.”

• The Washington Trust Bank Coeur d'Alene branch location on East Lakeside Avenue is undergoing remodel work. The location will remain open and accessible, but the main entrance and parking lot will be closed. • Lakeside CrossFit Athletic & Wellness Club will be at 215 E. Lakeside.

• A mixed-used building "Nonna" is planned for 102 E. Fourth Ave. in Post Falls. Mother-daughter Laura and Kelsey Horn will have commercial space on the main floor with a Miss Dazee's brunch restaurant. The three upper floors will house 33 apartments with 25 covered parking spaces and 18 on-street spaces. • Watch for a major development on property at the intersection of Hanley Avenue and Atlas Road.

• Two new buildings for the Local Markets company will open next year at the intersections of Best Avenue and 15th Street in Coeur d'Alene and Highway 41 and Hope Road in Post Falls. What they will offer will be similar to the existing Local Market at Atlas Road and Seltice Way. The Markets will have an emphasis on produce, fresh flowers, coffee and products sourced from local vendors with fresh-made deli sandwiches and pastry bars and premium espresso coffees with drive-throughs. Owned by Andy Singh, the stores are architecturally designed to fit the local landscapes and surrounding communities. They will include gas and electric car charging.

• A new building at 4378 W. Selway Ave. in Riverbend Commerce Park will house Dragon Jacket Insulation.

• A Milk & Honey coffee stand will be at 5273 Government Way.

• A proposed Marriott Hotel will be on about a half acre at 602 and 612 E. Sherman Ave. The six-story hotel would include 131 guest rooms, 130 parking stalls among the main level and three levels underground, an administration area, a bar, kitchen, lounge, dining area, meeting area, laundry, fitness room and a rooftop patio bar.

• The Marcus Anderson building under construction at 8182 N. Wayne Drive in Hayden has commercial units to be occupied by Ascent Counseling and Marcus Anderson Family Foundation (now at 8382 N.
