CHENNAI: The Virugambakkam all-women police on Friday arrested a suspended policeman on charges of raping a woman massage therapist and extorting Rs 65,000 from her by threatening to book her for prostitution.
The arrested man has been identified as Bavusha, 28, of Trichy who was attached to the armed reserve wing of the Chennai city police. He worked as a driver in the 2017 batch of the AR wing of the eighth platoon.He was placed under suspension on June 14 for indulging in anti-social activities.
Police said Bavusha trailed Kumudha (name changed) who was employed at a massage parlour in Virugambakkam. Kumudha noticed him talking to her neighbour when she returned home with her husband around 10pm on Oct 17.
Bavusha followed them and barged into their house. He told her that she was indulging in prostitution and that he was there to arrest her. He demanded Rs 1 lakh from her to drop the case.
Kumudha gave him Rs 50,000. As he demanded more money, she sent her husband to withdraw money from a nearby ATM.
When her husband left, Bavusha dragged Kumudha to a bedroom and raped her. When her husband returned home, he snatched Rs 15,000 from him and left the place.
Kumudha lodged a complaint with the Virugambakkam all-women police on Oct 23. The police registered a case under sections 319(2), 64, 408(6), 351(2) of the BNS arrested him from Thiruvanmiyur. He was remanded in judicial custody.
Police said Bavusha was involved in two cases reported in Vadapalani in 2024 and Thiruvanmiyur in 2023.
