My mate and I were in XXXX XXXX last night. My mate gave the waitress a 1000 baht note expecting 900 baht in change. When he counted it was short 20 baht. The 20 baht notes mixed in with hundred baht notes to disguise the 20 baht notes. What makes me think. this not just a one time thing or mistake is when he brought it to the attention of the waitress she walked right over to the cashier and got 20 baht. Oh maybe it was just 20 baht but it makes you wonder if this an everyday thing and how many times this occurs in a night. Sure helps the tip jar by the end of the night. Just suggesting count your change other then that had a good night in XXXX XXXX. I removed the establishment's name because I am not sure if is appropriate to put out there publicly on the forum.

i was in tesco in sheffield and they gave me change for a 5er rather then the 10er i had given them...not for a minute i thought she was going to pocket the difference just that she was an incompetent idiot..

some people are so parranoid in los always thinking they are all out to get you...rather then just being incompetent

Dunno, but perhaps paying for each drink separately? Quite sensible on occasion.

Anyway, tend to agree with the OP. It's not about the amount of course, but rather those principles (again). And these kind of scams (it's a scam whether it involves 20 Baht or 1000 Baht) are certainly much more common here than back home.

Personally I will most definitely dispute any bill if I know I'm being short-changed. And so should everyone else regardless of the amount.

i agree kris, but when the op states, the waitress went and got the change immediately, it makes you wonder, incompetence perhaps, but probably not.

agree with sundancekid 100%, it's the 'only 20bt or not even $1aud" attitude that encourages these rip offs. if they continue to be able to get away with it the will. he farang, have big money etc etc.

my local bar charges $4.50 for a schooner of beer, if i give them $20, i want 15.50 back, not 15, would it be reasonable to say ' oh it's not even a dollar they can keep it.'

when i first started going to LOS, i had the same attitude, small money not important, but now i manage my money, not to be tight, just to be sensible.
don't leave large tips, don't buy lady drinks often, don't pay over the odds for mc taxi (been asked many times for 100bt from sansabai to nanai 55)
it's not about been a scrooge, (far from it) but just realistic.

having a tg as the accountant helps as well,:
10bt here 20 bt there all adds up at the end of the day.

Not knocking them, I was just enquiring where you could get a couple of drinks in Patong for 100 Baht.
Trust me I feel the same way about scams, I hate it here in DBX when they think it is ok to serve you a glass of beer 2/3 liquid and 1/3 foam and charge you 7 or 8 quid for it.

I put this out there just for people to be aware. For those who are ok with getting cheated or short changed for what ever amount that is up to you. It's your money. Personally I don't much care to get cheated for any amount.

I thought about posting the name of the place but decided not to. Giving the benefit of the doubt to the establishment. But really I don't think it was an honest mistake by the reaction of the waitress and cashier. It tells me its an ongoing scam.

One beer 99 baht... Waitress given 1000 baht. Change was 8- 100 baht note and 4-20baht notes. for a total of 880 baht. The 20 baht notes mixed in with 100 baht notes to think/disguise/ mislead you in your counting. it also helps that the place is not well lit.

Always good to raise awareness no matter the size of the fraud. Got ripped $50 dollars on first day last year. Flew in after a long night flight and little sleep only to go to a regular bar in Bangla and had a few quiet ones with the owner, only to be ripped when i got my change didnt notice until i got back to room. Told the owner next day and he sacked the girl as it was the secon complaint and she had only been there a few months so was enough for him. No telling how many she short changed. If we don't speak up they get away with it.

to be fair they arent very good at maths, using a caluculator to work out the most simple sums. plus they could of been short on 100's and give you 20's thinking they have given you 5. on the other hand they just wanted to steal 20 from you....who knows..

Last April early one morning about 3am , stopped in a bar on Rat u Thit , on way home from Bangla , ordered a beer i got money out checked it ,gave 1000B to bar staff, beer was 80B so was expecting 920B , i was going to leave 20b tip anyway as it was my last drink 4 the nite, BUT she only gave me 20B change ??? i said where's the rest, reply u only gave me 100B , NO i gave u 1000B, i asked BG staff sitting next to me as she saw me give money over to say it was 1000B , but she was to scared of her boss behind bar , & said nothing. i had a few beers b4 hand & was really pissed off, i argued with her (manager) for a few minutes getting no where, just finished beer , and walked out. walked past the bar the next arvo , saw the manager she just looked at me , and turned her head down,

i was at a busy bar in leeds on sat night and my drink was £3.05 so i gave her £10 and also 5p. she gave my £6 change. I then said im £1 short and she without a second thought opened the till and got me my £1

usually when people make a genuine mistake they will need time to think about what went wrong and you can see it in their eyes that they have made a mistake - not this girl, she knew exactly what she was doing - 10 mins later my mate went to the bar to the same girl and the exact same thing happened - i told the manager and he sent her home :jap:

when people do things like this it really winds me up cos its as tho they think that your thick and cant count - well f**k you! have a nice time finding another job luv : )
