Dermatitis

Hiya all

Good evening. I have a case study to complete (Reflexology dip) 3 out of 4 and for this last one (a friend of mine) she has dermatitis on the bottoms of both feet. Would you treat her. In my contraindications list dermatitis is not mentioned except for skin complaints in general. Would you treat? Some people I have spoken to say it would help to ease soreness if I used an oil suitable for this condition. Is dermatitis contagious. I will also do some research and have another look back at my notes..........I don't remember covering dermatitis in my work.

Hi I think I have found it!

Eczema/Dermatitis : inflammation of the skin. Eczema starts with redness due to dilated blood vessels, fluid accumulates in the skin causing swelling, itching and blisters. Weeping skin develops and may become infected. It eventually dries to form scabs and crusts.

YUK! I think I will find another client/case study!! Would you treat!! Nope !!

You could always give a reflexology treatment using the reflex points on the hands.

1. Liver (right hand)
2. Spleen (left hand)
3 Large Intestine reflex
4. Kidney / Adrenal glands reflex
5. Neck reflex
6. Pituitary reflex

I would recommend to go on a cleansing program for this, as usually it is caused by a liver disorder.

I agree with rich, work the hands instead. One thing I've just thought of, I was watching street Dr's on BBC1 last night and there was someone with Dermatitis, who is a smoker, and apparently smoking makes the condition worse.
Does your friend smoke, this could be a contributing factor. Sorry I don't know much about it but I hope that helps a little[&:].

Hi Thanks for your posts guys.

No i don't think she smokes...........I say I don't think cos she is a recent friend !!her daughter goes to school with my daughter. But both parents are overweight - she is on Weightwatchers and lost 22lbs recently so she is doing the right thing losing weight, but she is short in height too so she is only tiny really!! Do you think the weight might have a bearing on the dermatitis ??? Eating the wrong foods certainly could not have helped her skin.

You do not say what type of dermatitis it is nor what might be the cause or if it is being treated conventionally in some way.

Don't go near it if the skin is broken or too sore.Dermatitis is not contageous but check there for any fungal or other infection which may have crept in.

Can you treat the hands instead?
Can you just avoid the area?
A partial treatment may assist in the client's healing process for benefit to that area even if you don't touch it! Just like RX does to the whole body.

Good points actually that you make there. I will ask her in more detail. She has suffered with dermatitis for a while, and apparently it is all over the soles of her feet. I will have a look at them and take it from there. I could do hand reflexology i suppose, never done it before but as part of my training it would be good experience and I have the notes on hand reflexology too so that would be a little different for me!!

Sorry but as someone who has suffered from eczema since I was a child and also dermatitis, I would like to say this. My eczema started due to a cows milk allergy which triggered it. Neither eczema nor dermatitis are contagious.
I grew out of my eczema but I have very sensitive skin, I dont wear foundation, I cant use soap or anything like it anywhere near my face, I cant use Radox, even certain Body Shop products have the effect of making me look like my face has been burnt.
I also had some flare ups of dermatitis which my GP could not identify where they came from.
I suffered from patches on my hands and fingers when I was at uni and they went away on their own in the end but I was in pain for years.
Normally something like an allergy to nickel or something ina detergent triggers that off.
Cows milk aside as a baby, it isnt due to my diet which is healthy. I am not super skinny like many of the population but I am fit and active.
Sorry but the word YUK in your post I didnt think was very kind. I would also like to point out that I am in my spare time a holistic therapist and I would imagine that something like reflexology could be very good for a dermatitis sufferer as stress can also trigger attacks.
I used to get patches of eczema on my neck as a teenager and was sick and tired of people mocking me and asking did I have love bites on my neck. It can be hard enough suffering from it without people debating whether or not you have eczema or dermatitis because you are overweight.
I was less than 2 pounds in weight when I was born and I had eczema as soon as I was fed cows milk. Weight had absolutely nothing to do with it.

This person who has dermatitis is a friend of mine. I meant to say YUK to the 'weeping' in my last post if you read it correctly. I did not refer to her weight as being a particular reason why she had it. I am sure any could get it, whatever weight, height, gender, age, etc............my daughter has ezcema but very mildly on her legs we feel this is due to her hormone levels she is 13. I would not touch a weeping wound and I am sure any one with common sense would not - this is what we are trained to look out for. The question I was asking was whether they would have treated.It does not matter how close you are to someone if they have a particular skin condition that may be contagious which is what I was asking as we had not covered it in great detail then would people treat. It did not even occur to me it may weep initially as I thought dermatitis was a dry condition. I did not mean to offend.When saying YUK i was referring to the weeping not the person ! People on these forums I think take things a little too personally, each condition is different, and that is how we learn by asking questions on here. I am sorry if you took offence at my poor choice of words. I will be careful in future.

I would also like to point out that I have many friends who are overweight and no none of them have dermatitis.I just wanted to see if there was a particular type of food she should avoid - maybe she needs to see a nutritionist - it may be due to stress, or an allergy.

The best person to see in my view would be her GP as a starting point or a dermatologist. If you are looking at the complementary therapy route then I think kinesiology might also be useful.
Diet and eczema can be linked but there are different types of eczema and dermatitis. I also suffer from hay fever and I believe that I am basically prone to allergies. In a lot of cases dairy is a factor in eczema.
I also think that your friend needs to choose whether she wants the allergies dealt with and this may be a sensitive subject to approach.
You may be correct in saying that people take things personally on this board, I was merely stating how eczema and dermatitis affected my life, I spent my childhood covered in steroid creams which my mum hated using on me due to the side effects. I had to go to bed with bandages round my legs to stop me scratching until I was red raw. I was only able to sit in the sunshine for any length of time after the age of 20 when my eczema died down because sunlight also triggered my eczema off.
People only become sensitive to things in their life when other people make it a big deal and that was certainly my case. I would also like to say that the textbook definition of dermatitis may not always match the outbreak. I suffered from dermatitis for about 3 years in my 20s when I was sitting exams at university and although I was in pain, to such an extent that I could barely hold a pen, I wasnt covered in sores that were red and weeping.
Nickel allergies, sensitivity to soap powders and detergents as far as I am aware are the greatest cause of dermatitis.
My mum had an extremely bad case of dermatitis on her leg which took years and several doctors to deal with, because her original outbreak became infected with a fungus and no amount of superstrength steroid creams would take away the infection.
