Ear Candling

I do ear candling, has anyone else have any bad stories about it?

Welcome to MassagePlanetL. Personally, I only provide ear candling to close friends and family members. Have never felt comfortable with the possible liability issues. However, you may find more MassagePlanetL board members with ear candling experience here:

I LOVE ear candling! and clients love it too! The very first time I had it done though was by a fellow coworker and she accidentally lost the coal off the top and it fell on my ear! haha try flailing around to get a piece of burning wax off your ear with a burning candle still in your ear....difficult and scary haha...that's my only bad experience. Just make sure there's a towel draped around their ear and side of the face. I dont' really see any liability issues with it

It depends on what insurance you carry. ABMP's insurance specifically states that it does not cover ear candling. Not that anyone is necessarily going to sue over it, but it's a good idea to check your policy.

What about AMTA?? Do they cover ear candling?

The fire department here goes ape over regular candles burning. I bet they never even thought that someone would put a flaming piece of wax covered cloth in someones ear!

I dont do it because I dont believe in it. Even if I did, I still wouldnt because of the liability.

I received ear candling once... Don't know why, as my ears don't produce much wax... Needless to say, it didn't work and my hair caught on fire! LOL!

It didn't work...what exactly did you expect to happen? I've read a lot about this, and it seems like everyone expects it to hoover out a great gob of wax. That little flame produces enough vacuum to move the smoke and little else. What else did I read? It's good for those with ear aches, ear infections. the heat and smoke will help dry out the ear if there is trapped water, like from swimming.

It'd really suck if a client came for a massage once, said "that didn't work" and never had massage again.

I think this is the main point of this post. YIKES!! Hair catching on fire is NOT good!!

I do this on my son when he thinks he is getting an ear infection and it seems to avert it. However, I too would not do it on a client for liability reasons.

If you stick the candle through a hole in a foil pie plate, it is most unlikely that any burning material will fall on the patient.
