Georgia National Exam

Has anyone in Georgia taken the National Exam? Particularly around the Atlanta area? Any study guides that seem to be better than the others that anyone knows of? It only took the Board 8 days to process my paperwork (this includes counting the weekend). I have to call this week to set up my testing time and date. Yes, I am having a slight panic attack due to I am a horrible test taker. Any suggestions from anyone that has completed the test will be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on having your paperwork processed so fast. I had heard that GA was slooooow. That being said, GA changed their rules as of July 2007? so you will take the NCBTMB or national exam. I am currently a student at Atlanta School of Massage and all of our tests supposedly prepare us for this and we have a study book for the purpose of study for this test. Try visiting the NCBTMB website and see how you can get a hold of study material, I heard it is the basic stuff that you learn in school; alot about the muscles, actions and insertions, diseases, special orthopedic tests and assessments, contraindications, and basic anatomy and phyisiolgy questions. I did meet a CMT recently and she purchased a study guide online that she pretty much said was useless so be wary. She went to school in somewhere in TN where licensing was not as stringent. I actually took the exam last month. I passed. I will warn you, even though all the schools curriculum is to prepare you for this test, there is no preparation for the questions they ask. I received over 30 "bodywork" questions. This includes knowing where to place the needle on the body for certain meridians. I also received a few questions on a disease that 1% of the population has. There is a new exam that the state is accepting in place of the nationals due to the number of complaints made about the nationals. Hopefully with this new test competing with the nationals, the nationals will realize that most of their questions are out of line. My personal opinion about studying for this test is study everything. You never know what kind of questions you will receive. Also, do not over analyze the questions. Every question has two answers that apply. Only if you read the question for what it is the answer is clear.

I am so glad that you responded. I figured by the time that I had posted, you would have probably already taken the exam. Where did you go to school? Atlanta School of Massage supposedly prepares you for the exam and they said that they modified the curriculum so that you will know the majority of it. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. So GA is developing a new exam or do they have one in place? Not sure but I think GA used to have their own exam. Honestly, I would rather take the nationals and recieve that certification only because it would mean that you could work out of many states as many accept it.

I graduated from ASHA in December. The schools do their best to prepare the students, although the National exam changed as of January this year.
The questions are more in depth. The new exam apparently was created to give competition to the National. Hopefully by the time you take the test, the National board will realize that Massage Therapist's are not in school to be acupuncturists. Good luck to you.
