Giving a talk

I have just been approached by a womens group and asked to do a talk on reflexology. She asked for my fee but as Ive never done a talk/demo before was caught on the hop a bit. I said Id do it for free but suggested a donation to camcer research.
Do any of you charge or is it the norm to do it for free? I know its a great opportunity to pick up new business, so any pointers would also be a great help

Hi,

I think ranging from free to £40. At my local therapist group we have speakers bi-monthly and the most expensive that we have to pay is £50. Although saying that some do offer there services for free which is nice for the group as we only pay a door fee and then contribute to raffle and tea/coffee, so that goes torwards paying for any speakers that we have through the year.

What a fantastic opportunity for you and your business, I give talks from time to time, normally charge about £20 -£25, not unless it is a charity,then my fee is waived. Talks usually last 15 - 20 minutes, i have my marketing material about, along with contact details, i make my talk, light and entertaining, usually involve the audience too. The best part of it you can network with the people as well, also make contacts.

Not an opportunity to be missed, so go for it, have fun, enjoy it, never know what is going to come out of it.

Hi

I can see that you're an experienced Therapist. I only recently qualified am am struggling to get clients so I've arranged to do a talk at the local library on how reflexology can help with stress etc. I've never done a talk or even given a presentation so I am extremely nervous. I've got some great advice from the reflexology forum but can you give me an outline of what you normally say or how you get the conversation going? And what sort of promotional stuff do you bring? Sorry to ask all these questions but this is a new career for me and I need to find my feet. Hope you have time to reply. The workshop is on Tuesday! ! !

I did a talk to a group of A level students at a school in Colchester, sometime last year on Aromatherapy, I did it for free, but got a lovely gift of Green & Blacks miniatures chocolate from their tutor I never thought of asking for anything, nor did they offer.

Hi Deborah O,

Make yourself a little sign in sheet, that way you get some information on your guests, you can use this for marketing with their consent.

Your marketing material should give the benefits of your therapy, along with how to find you, the easier you make it for them to find you the better., i typically use an A5 flyer, or a brochure, depending on which area of my business i am doing a talk on.

When you do your presentation say how reflexology can help them relieve stress, and how good it feels to have the stress released. We can all relate to stress, we all suffer with it from time to time.

Might be an idea to get a volunteer to have a mini treatment with you.

Normally a little questions and answer session works well,you get a rapport going that way,people like to connect.

When you have finished your presentation, work out what worked well, and what did not, that way you know what works, and what needs thinking about, ready for your next presentation.

Most people get a little nervous when doing a presentation, it soon passes, when you have done one, the next is a little bit easier. I still get nervous,but with a little relaxation technique, i soon calm down.

Thanks for all the tips , It wont be till next year so Im not worrying yet ive got lots of time to get prepared, but Ive never done any public speaking before so I know nearer the time I will be terrified!!!!!

Good luck with your talk I hope it goes well. You've got plenty of time to practice. Just have a plan that you can roughly work to, but always be prepared for some changes.
