How do massage therapists travel?

I am in school studying to become a massage therapist and my teacher was telling us about all of these awesome things he got to do- like travel abroad to Thailand, India, China, Australia to study different massage therapy techniques. I'd like to travel abroad too once I graduate but I am wondering, how the hell can anyone actually afford that? How does that work? I mean, is everyone just pretty much throwing themselves into debt?

Not necessarily. Sure, some people are irresponsible with their money and throw themselves into debt. But you can absolutely do this. You need to make a budget for yourself once you get your license and start working. Make sure you save a certain amount each month to go toward continuing education. You'll have to have CEUs to keep your license, and you may have to work for a few years before you build up enough clientele to allow you to save for the big trips. But as long as you save the money so you're not doing the trips on credit, and consult a good CPA so you can properly deduct the expense of trips from your taxes, you can do this.
