how would you explain the difference...

so i start my holistic massage teaching this week... eeeks.... and it occurred to me that some smart alec may ask, "whats the difference between swedish and holistic massage"...

and i will reply..... " .........................................................."

nah, lets make this fun... YOU would reply?????? ;o)

My response would be along the lines of Swedish massage being the mechanics of the bodywork. In Swedish massage you have your basic effleurage, pettrissage, friction, tapotement etc. In a strict Swedish massage you are just purely working on the muscles of the body. In a Holistic (or in the case of my qualification Therapeutic) you approach the client as a hole, you come to the treatment to treat mind, body and spirit through your massage. You are looking after the whole, rather then the sum of the parts.

Hmmm, i am starting my A&P course tomorrow evening and i would like to do Body Massage afterwards, my local college though only does courses in Swedish BM , as a new student to all this, i dont understand the explanations above but would still like to know the difference and also which one is best, please so could you explain it again in English please (cough) Thankyou.

Here is my take.....having done the swedish, course, itec were about to change the name half way through a few years ago...


Swedish, "designed" by Per Henrik Ling and deals with the mechanics only of a massage.......and typically is symtomatic ie it hurts here, ok massage here not worry about why

Holistic, is the "new age" version of this....same massage, it hurts here....oh ok lets have a look and see what it is in your INTEGRAL BIOLOGY (posh phrase for lifestyle) that will cause this and how best to avoid it happening in future whilst also looking at there lifestyle as a whole and improving things such as sleep patterns, diet, water intake etc etc..

tracy, interesting... i did swedish too although i remember at the interview prior to acceptance on the course, i was asked what holism meant. (as an aside... did you ever learn the techniques andrew is alluding to? <g&gt

foz... "you approach the client as a hole"... is that a big black hole of doom? ;o) just pulling your leg! so can i take it you would say therapeutic and holistic are the same?

heres another thing... (lol which i obviously got onto in a minute)

i had my induction for the teaching job i start tomorrow evening, which i have to tell you, i am having serious misgivings about... could be cold feet, could be all the yucky rules and regulations that them in the offices dosh out. this is a non vocational course and the emphasis should be on enjoyment and fun.

now they approached me (from a previous job application, massage unrelated), were desperate, said i had to be willing to undertake the C & G 7407 (which i am) talked about agreements with local college (good i thought, i wont have to pay!), now to be told that yes, i will be paying and i should be doing it ASAP!! TBH, i'd rather spend my money on a mani/pedi course and why am i looking for a job? cos i aint go no money!! so i have got all in a tizz... and my initial contract is only 10 weeks anyway! they may not run the course again <g>.

okok... i digress... SHE said, ITEC also changed the name to holistic massage because of the swedish connotations (bourne out by andrew!).

oooo that was good to get that off my chest! positive thoughts, positive thoughts...

It's the politics in teaching that have put me off. I remember the pressure my tutor was under during my course, with the powers that be all trying to put in there two pen'erth. It drove her absoultely barmy in the end.

oh Rosie, my heart goes out to you . I used to teach class at a local college ( not massage) and they approached me I used to be a teacher but had changed jobs and wrote a lot of training stuff they had heard about so i had a lot of experience.
Working first in schools and then for the LEA I thought I knew all there was about beauocracy. How wrong I was. i was nearly driven mad by the college all the form filling and blah blah blah. BUT the people on the course were great we had a lot of fun and learnt a great deal from each other and I agreed to go back and back. I had a full time job as well and when I got promoted i had to give up the night class but my initial 10 weeks lasted 18 months!

So go for it enjoy the people the experience the fun and who knows you might just make a career out of it

i feel more positive about it now. i am sure i can make this an enjoyable experience for those coming to class. and i have decided to just lay low and avoid talk of the C & G course, at the moment. there are no available courses this term, it seems and who knows what will happen after this 10 weeks.

so... i am not gonna bust a gut about it!

Just a little note to Rosie, and all you teachers out there.......
I have done many non vocational courses, Intro to reflexology, card making, intro to sign language, jewelery making, Aromatherapy,and many others. They were a life saver for me. During my darkest days they provided me with a focus and goals, a place to be me, friendship, fun, and lastly I learnt something new I look back on them now and I realise how much I actually got from doing them, and the support I recieved from my Reflexology teacher, above and beyond her teaching role was beyond measure, so keep up the good work, you will be helping people in more ways than just teaching your subject

hi donna,

thats one of the benefits i see in doing non vocational classes. many people want to do things for interest only, to make new friends, to get out and about. i am very disappointed with what is offered in my part of the borough i live in... very little non qualification stuff... even the IT courses gear towards CLAIT.

luckily, i teach individuals how to use their computers and i pick up quite a few that have been on the free courses and found them unsuitable. i mean, who wants to learn EXCEL and ACCESS, in their right minds? <g>
