Sad to see anyone struggling to make a quid. A Thai friend of mine has lost the lot.
She had a girlie bar on the south end of Kata beach , there's a heap of similar bars there. big rent 25K Mo and 150K annual key money was her downfall, she lost her home and car as well, is now home in Issan. I'm wondering if this is all too common in Kata.uch: I wouldnt imagine the area is bustling .

Well regardless of previous assertions to an opposite view the reality is that for small business the Patong "High Season" is no longer six months long (from November 1st to April 30th) it is more like two months with a small surge around Songkran.

The low season Aussie invasion is package tour based for couples and families, often with highly subsidized hotel rooms and apart from shopping and eating has little effect on the "entertainment zones". (with the exception of sneaky massages).

Basic Patong economics Rule #1

No ST/LT = no BG income = greatly reduced spending on services (ST rooms, hair/beauty salons, cosmetics, clothes etc).

Went in a couple of bars last night were I have been the first customer they have had in 3 days. I am sure my one Tiger and a glass of some fruit based drink for the lady saw their shares soaring.

Must be soul destroying for the girls (not because I hadn't been in for a while) but with sod all to do. Then pestering the fat bloke from Rochdale for a drink when he's only got 500 on him and had only just popped out for a pizza......Cough!

I see the Swedish Restaurant next to the SCB is up for sale (open one high season after an expensive refit) as is the Blues Brothers Bar next to the (one of the) 7-11's which didn't last much longer. But it was a French bar so understandable.

Bar Buyer/Owner beware I guess.

May is always really slow, then things tend to pick up in June. That having been said, I wonder if any punters will look to lease those new bars going up in that big building going up right past Kata center going towards club med?

Funny enough, my Mrs. has a piece of dirt in Kata she rented out for 20K/mo and the guy taking out the lease is building a bar!!

Be a lot going to the wall this low season in my opinion and not just in Kata but all across the island. Was in Bangla last week, most of the bars from midway down the sois do not have one customer and haven't had much better for months, every time I go into Tong its the same.

Even allowing for the bars being open 12 hours+ in Kamala, a lot are really feeling the crunch this year and yet new ones keep on opening.

I'll add to Denvers list, Tasty shut, no one will take it over, Swiss bar next to Buffalo Steak House gone, guy broke and going home. Reckon Aussie Bar is now the busiest in the village, probably Mays second, after that the others must really be scraping it, or not as time will tell us!!!

There's no indication the bar referred to by the OP suffered some catastrophic or unforseeable event.

Low season, key money, being in a quiet area, taking on house or car payments based on unsustainable takings - who would've thunk it?

actually its getting a bit difficult to know where to take someone to have a drink lately...no one in just about any kamala Bars...even some of my mates here who own bars don't even go into them anymore because they are customerless and boring...god only knows what it will be like in the real trough of the low season

kata/karon is very seasonal..not a lot of expats there to keep them afloat during the long LS.......

even i have been forced into patong a couple of times a week to stave off the boredom
