Looking for a good Reflexology course

Hi

I am keen to find a good reflexology course that runs at weekends. I live in Hertforshire so I can easily travel to London or Essex. I already have my A&P. From my experience, all the best courses come from recomendations.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am currently doing a Reflexology course with the British School of Reflexology in Harlow, Essex (I live in Warwick) which is perfect for me.

The lectures and practical lessons are done over 6 weekends. The course runs for one year. You will need to go away to Essex 7 times during the year to attend the lectures and practical lessons (and once for the 2 day exam!). The rest of the time, the practical treatments and module papers are done at home. We need to do a total of 72 treatments spanning 12 clients (6 treatments each) and the A&P is quite indepth which you would need as a practitioner anyway.

I will be doing my exams on 25th/ 26th October this year, but I know that I have been tought enough to hit the ground running, as it were, when I set up my clinic. The course is very professionally run. Pricey, but I think you get what you pay for don't you!!.

Even after the course has finished, you still have the support of the lecturers which I think is great.

As you can tell, I would recommend this course if you don't mind travelling!!

And I have just trained with the International Institute of Reflexology (IIR) .
These were held in London - Regent's College.
Again 6 weekends over the course of the year. with Home study.

I chose this course because it it the school run by Dwight Byers - Eunice Ingham's Nephew. He learned from her and I like to get things from the horses mouth as it were.
It is quite a different technique to ITEC for example. I was a case study for a friend doing ITEC reflexology so I have experienced both.

I suggest you contact a few schools , London School of Reflexology and the British Reflexology Association are a couple of others. and go and have a treatment with a graduate from the ones you like the sound of. - not a cheap way of researching but you will then be confident that you enjoy treatments in the technique you learn.

The Association of Reflexologists is another good place to look for training courses near you.

Hi,
I've almost finished my training with the International Institute of Reflexology as well and can highly recommend this course.
The standards are extremely high. The exam has an 80% pass mark and you need to do 100 hours of case studies over the year.
I've done the course in Nottingham and it's run as one day a month for a year here.

Janey, I'd be really interested to hear about the differences between this and the ITEC technique as our tutor keeps telling us there is a big difference but as I've never had a treatment from someone with the ITEC qualification I wouldn't know exactly what the differences are.

I did all my courses there. To be honest, you can criticise most courses for one thing or another. I loved mine there, they weren't perfect, but I didn't want them to finish.

I can help you on this. I have just done ITEC, did ITEC in aroma too.

Basically your course will have been more demanding (now don't all get upset!!!)

I would have to enter all my case studies and be assessed to get MAR or other membership (a friend of mine did). After that I could become an associate member for a year then full.

We have to do 54 case studies (10 people x 4 treatments - plus the others), three hour written paper, one hour practical - plus of course the course work.

However, I have decided not to bother. I really think it is what you make of it and the learning begins after you train. I joined the AOC (aromatherapy Organisation Council) and GUESS WHAT??? I read this week they have disbanded! It is all in a tizz at the moment and all changing - hopefully for the better with higher standards etc.

So, basically ITEC is fine and also is VTCT as they now do advanced courses, good and bad therapists pass through all of them. If you ain't any good, you won't get any clients, and that's the important bit!

Does David have a long beard and long white hair? If so, he is an amazing tutor - I had hom at Barnet college for my reflexolog and body massage and now I've got hime for Indian Head massage.

His practical knowledge is excellent

He sure does - bless his little cotton socks! Of course he doesn't wear them with his sandles. He does work at Barnet College too. What a love that man is. I don't think I ever saw him get upset or cross about anything ever - he is a one off. Mind you the amount of kisses he gets off his female students it's hardly surprising is it?

Where are you then? I left Barnet last summer to move back to the North West.

I trained last year with the Association of Reflexologists. They have courses all over the country and are usually 1 evening per week. It is a really good course and you become an associate member at the end. www.AoR.org
I attended my course in Chingford and it started again last week but probably not too late to join. It is with the East London School of Reflexology.

The A & P is integral.

Thanks Candie for explaining the difference between the course which you did and the IIR course. What I really wanted to know is what is the difference in technique if any?

My tutor has implied that under the Reflexology Forum there will soon be 2 different types of reflexology; clinical reflexology and the more beauty therapy based reflexology.

I'd like to know your thoughts.

Hi sorry been away for a while and only just seen the question from Sulis.

The main difference was in the leverage.( this was not a term she was aware of) and the walking techniques - both thumb and fingers. There is no "hook in, backup. And cream is used.
there were fewer techniques used for locating specific reflexes .

It was very much more of a relaxing treatment . I had few tender spots with the ITEC , in fact I drifted off at times. but I find the IIR quite "stimulating"!!!!!! I would say I did really enjoy the ITEC treatment , but it was a different experience.

there is a lot less movement around the foot - my therapist was on a static stool and this worked fine for her. And one foot at a time is treated.while the other is covered. My therapist was very knowledgeable and had really understood the treatment. it was just different.

This was why a suggested having a few different treatments - but of course every one also develops their own style in every treatment no matter where they have been taught.

Hi - think very much depends on the teacher and the therapist.

To be honest, no therapist should be on a static stool - you need to move about a bit.

I did ITEC (as you know) and did hook and back up etc. Yes, we do one foot at a time. They do teach you with cream where I trained - other friends who did ITEC elsewhere used powder. You can't really compare like that - each college teaches differently. I use essential oils anyway mixed with an oily cream - it's isn't set in stone.

If I had a choice of going to do ITEC or doing Bayley or Eunice Ingham or AOR or IFR, I would choose one of the latter, but I didn't have the choice. At the end of the day it is what you make of it, they just teach you the basics and then you need to read and work on lots of feet. You could be taught the best technique ever but if you are a good therapist or if you aren't prepared to learn from clients and other therapists then it ain't much use!

It can be difficult choosing a course, you just have to do what you can with the limits set upon you either financially or location wise.

Don't worry too much about it - lots of people do VTCT courses which are much of a muchness as ITEC.

Hiya again, I am living back on the Wirral where I grew up (about half an hour from Chester and Liverpool) and I have to say, I don't miss Barnet! I lived in Bedford Avenue, right opposite the tube station, do you know it? Oh I do not miss having the car windscreen put through every six months and the wing mirrors being smashed off by baseball bats by drunks on their way home and being woken up virtually every night by them shouting and singing.

It is very peaceful here (so far anyway!) and lovely and a well kept secret.
