Marathon Massage

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody from here is going to be doing massage, for the London Marathon runner which is on Sunday 17 April, as this is the first year they are offering this service. Of course you have to do it for nothing to help the Hospices, I dont know if I would have much of arm left by the time I finish,it's 10 minute leg massage, factoring in a 10 minute break per hour & 2 other 20 minute breaks, got to get there between 8:15 & 11.30 and hopefully pack up when the last runner departed around, 18:15 - 18:30.
well I'm doing it for good cause, i'm not good runner.

I didnt know they were looking for people!

My brother is running,(in aid of Muscular Dystrophy) and he is coming to see me on the tuesday after for a massage, and I also have a client who is flying out tomorrow for the Sahara Marathon (an amazing mararthon over desert and lasting 5 days!) who I have been treating and will come to me when he gets back from Morroco. I have also had 2 other marathon runners as clients, so hope to see them again soon afterwards.

If I lived nearer, I certainly would have liked to have been there, but can't make it this time. Do let me know how you get on - a great opportunity to meet potential clients!

I have had a few invites this year to help massage runners, but unfortuantely am away in Amsterdam so unable to make it.

But I would strongly recommend anyone who can take this amazing opportunity, it really is an incredibly rewarding day. I did it for the NSPCC though my old college, when the runners start coming in they were queueing out of the door of our little room - that was two therapists per runner. The buzz and energy in the room was fantastic - electric.

I had one woman who's legs I massaged. She came in, early 40's - clearly knackered and probably in pain. But she glow and broad smile and her face said it all - she didn't care! She told me that she had just done her lifetimes ambition and done the London Marathon and she didn't care how much her body ached. She'd raised a load of money for the NSPCC and got her medal. I have so much respect for people who can do that.

Hi karen,

the charity that we are doing is called "Help the Hospices" and they have almost 500 runners to form the sunflower Runners team, and there will be also 1000 runners representing local hospices on the day, is your brother going to be running for a hospice, the massage is for the runners who want it , we are going to be in Queen Elizabeth ll Conference Centre. I dont know if thats meeting place for all the runners or not, maybe if you ask him, where is he's meeting place where he get to meet the family & friends at the end of the race.

I'd love to help out, can you tell me who I contact?? My brother-in-law is running and I was thinking about asking him if he wanted a massage before the race, but this would be much better, I'm used to doing non-stop massage for hours on end as I do alot of work at exhibitions etc, usually on neck and back.

I too am helping out at the London Marathon this year, I've not done it before so should be exciting and a real learning curve! I am doing a two hour slot with another charity, so depending on where your post race reception is, I may be able to split myself in two and lend a massaging hand!

Hi all,
Some friends and I are volunteers with the Cancer UK post race reception team. We are based in Carlton House Terrace ( I think.)
They reckon they'll have about 1,700 runnners with about 800 wanting massages at the end.
We have never done anything on this scale before and believe it will be an incredible experience.

I did this last year through the healing tent for the motor neurone disease assoc really good day, i felt my faith restored in society with the runners.

and i am again this year but can't decide as i've had email from healing tent and MSCM

I've never done anything like this either. Five hours bent to work on someone lying on the floor is daunting. I have booked a session with my massage therapist for the next day. Warned her I might be a bit late getting to her and my crawl speed may be slow....

Hiya Miss Alaska,

I've volunteered for a stint in the healing tent for MND next Sunday - the flyer/blurb says that all equipment etc is provided.

When you did your day for them last year, did they have couches for the massages? I'm a bit worried by the messages posted after yours about working on the floor - I've got a dodgy knee and probably couldn't manage that.

I'm glad that the posts all say that it's a rewarding day - just need to find a therapist to give me a once-over after I've finished.

With the people I'm doing the massage, I've been told they provide the couch, but I have to bring two large towels & whatever medium I use for Massage and something for the head, I think I'll take couple of couch rolls as well, as I dont think two towels would be enough for the amount people I'll be doing, I cant understand why they dont provide everything. Havent they heard of cross infections, I wonder!

Hi all,
I'm also massaging for "Children in Crisis' charity. I'haven't done the marathon before. I dont know which room i'm gonna be yet. I'll be there at nineish... I know it's bit too early, but a friend of mine has kindly agreed to give me a lift to as closest as possible,( there will be road blocks I presume) as i'll be bringing my own couch, towels and oil.

I had chat with the people who are doing the organizing, not to bring any couch roll as it is provided, so is the table, but bring two or three top so i can have a change of clothing ( as i could get quite a bit sweaty too), two sets of towels, something for the head, a sandwich just in case i dont like what they are offereing on the day and a bottle of water so i wont get dehydrated, and what ever medium i use, wipes to clean those sweaty feet, but nothing about disclamier, but i can bring my business cards if I want to get more client from my area to hand out. good luck to those who are doing the massage and those who are running, hope you have great day, i shall come back to tell you all, how it went, might have to use my toes to type as i think my fingers might to tried.
