Muscle pain from reaction to meds

My Mom was prescribed Levaquin for a sinus infection 3 weeks ago. She began to have pain in her L knee and gastroc, R tibialis ant, and L shoulder joint. She stopped taking the medicine after 13 days...just before her last day. The doctors even checked her for a blood clot because of the pain she was describing, but it wasn't a clot. Joint/muscle pain is a side effect of Levaquin in some ppl.

Her shoulder and R leg are better, but her L gastroc is still extremely painful. Could it be because the medication still hasn't worked out of her system?

It could be still because of the medicine. Also, if she is on any cholesterol meds, muscle pain is a very common (but listed as rare) side effect. Actually, any med is suspect, so if she is on any she should talk to her pharmacist. The pharmacist should be able to tell her about how long it will take for a med to work its way out of her system - each med has a specific "half life".

I took a BP pill for a couple weeks until the "very rare" cough drove me crazy. Anyone ever cough while wearing a CPAP mask? Not pleasant. I CAN think of worse things, but.....a different medication will be better.

My FIL has a lot of muscle pain due to the pills he takes, but denies that it is the cause.

That is frustrating. At least Mom is open-minded about things and willing to do everything she can to help herself. She did call this morning very happy that she felt some of it loosen in the worst part of her leg. She said it's still pretty sore, but better, and is relieved to know it's moving out. We're leaving next week to go on vacation out west and are very hopeful it will be totally better by then.

Levaquin has been known to cause inflammation in tendons and tendon rupture.

As well, there are bacterial infections that when killed by antibiotics can cause what is called a 'herxheimer reaction' which in turn can cause joint swelling, muscle aches and pain, as well as some really scary neurotoxins that can really wallop the Central Nervous System. One of these bacterial infections is lyme disease for example.

I hope she feels better soon.
