November 2008 AOR Exam - any takers?

Hi. Took my theory exam on Saturday with the AOR's November paper and was really perturbed. My colleagues and I were faced with a number of questions we had not covered with our tutor/weren't prepared for. We've all worked really hard and I wonder if others have had the same experience or whether it's just us. We've all passed our pratical, case studies, mock exams etc and the tutor even said before we started that she was particularly unhappy with one of the questions!

I am sorry but I had to read this more than once "the tutor even said before we started that she was particularly unhappy with one of the questions! " If this is an exam - the tutor should not know what was on the paper! All papers should be opened in front of the students by the officer in charge - & that is not your tutor. I am horrified - this tutor could have told you all before the exam what was on there.

Hi. I take your point entirely but she obviously had not told us anything in advance as we were so unprepared for what we faced.
I took this course to make a total change in the direction of my life and am now worried that I've just wasted a year.

Hi, I was wondering what college you were with ? I'm doing my exams in April and just wanted to ask if you had any past papers or any advice, I'm sure all went with your exams and remember you only need 60% to pass. Best Wishes

Hi chickenlicken - the good news is that the results came in just before Xmas and I have passed - phew!! I was so amazed as it really was not what we had been prepared for. I now need to hook up with some colleagues and start to look for a way to put it into practice. It's very scary so any tips will be much appreciated. Thank you so much for your support.

I'm afraid copy exam papers are a bit like hens teeth - I don't know why they are so secret. There are a load of old questions in healthy pages which I found really helpful and depending on which examining body you are with, you should be able to get a handle on a course syllabus and work your way through what that details. Your tutor should have some questions you can use as revision and I took all the questions we had been set as homework throughout the year and created a list of about 100 questions which I could use in the last week or so to test myself. Good luck, it's worth the effort when that certificate lands on your doorstep.

Your tutor should be sent an update every two months outlining responses to the questions for past papers (it can be hard when you havent seen the original paper though), but that should give him or her some guidance on the sorts of questions asked. It isn[t ideal as some of the questions can be very ambiguous or the responses needed very specific - so what can look like an obvious answer may not be accepted. It is something which does lead a lot of tutors to having some shock as the questions and results obtained by their students on an ongoing basis.

AoR / ABC only have one mock exam paper available to studentspresently, although they are looking into changing this in the future.
That said, multi-choice have their own issues and can often lead to trouble too, so there seems to be no right way to do it.
