The most common split is 50/50 or 60/40 in your favor. Occasionally you'll get 70/30. What happens after 6 months?
Pay by commission is one of the practices I wish would disappear from the industry as it causes a great many bad decisions and mis-guided bad feelings, as illustrated above.
If 50/50 or 60/40 in the therapists favor is most common, someone being offered 40/60 "feels" like they are being taken advaneforum.xxxe of.
But commission % is a meaningless concept without the treatment price.
Over the years we have had technicians turn down our offers because the "split wasn't fair". 80% commission at Massage Envy pays less than 40% commission at our spa -- which would you rather have?
I have several comp massages I need to fulfill next month, for which I would gladly pay you 100% commission. When can you start?
You also need to know the volume of services you can expect. LIke we used to say in the concrete business, you can sell 1 ton for $1000 or 100 tons at $10.
Furthermore, the OP mentioned this was a "job", not a contract, and the establishment provided sheets and product - something done for employees not contractors. Being an employee has different economics than being a contractor.
The only way to truly evaluate this offer is to figure out what you think you time, talent and dedication are worth. If x% * $Y * # of Treatments meets your needs then take the job. It does not matter if the spa down the street pays a different %, that is the not the job you were offered. When you have competing offers, then you can compare them.
