playing background music

Hi, i am starting out as a mobile reflexoologist and wanted to know is it best to play back ground music during treatments, any advise appreciated.

Do you feel like shlepping your player along? Suppose if it was a walkman or Ipod or something, it won't be too bad to take.

I prefer music as it can drown out background noice, specially if it is a new surrounding for you and you don't know how noicey (sp??) the place is. However, you also have to be careful as sometimes, depending on the music, the client and even their moods, it can irritate them. I always tell them that this whole session is about them, their comfort etc, and if it bugs them, or is too loud, they should say.

In the end I think it is personal preference and as you have your client in front of you, you are the only one that can judge each situation.

I think that probably the most simple option is to ask them if they mind having music or if they would prefer silence. Most of the time they don't mind having it. Also, just a note from my experience.. lots of people have had enough of plink plink whale song! . I personally use a cd by the name of Namaste or in the same vein, Honouring.. However, that may be a bit too for some but my clients don't seem to mind it.. aha.. or do they???

Hi thanks for ur replies, i was thinking that perhaps taking along extra equipment ie. cd player and cds might be too much for me to carry along with the other things, but i could get a small portable one, not sure where i'd get this from, any help much appreciated!

Hi, I usually have a portable CD player in the car in case, but actually most clients I visit at home have their refelxology in a room where they already have a CD player! Also, nothing wrong with asking them when they book if they a a CD player available or if you should bring your own.

Just qualified and whilst practicing for our case studies I found people liked various music, the majority liked quiet music, a number of people including my husband hated the music I liked, so my husband now has his Reflex/IHM/EC with the best of Eagles, Genissis, etc, I think each to their own and ask the client what they would like.

A portable DVD player is great to play cd's on & light enough to slip down side of bag!

I was advised by my Reiki teacher to always put a Sodalite crystal on top of any electrical equipment i use nearby my clients....but must cleanse mine as everytime i use my cd player with it on top it goes weird & starts jumping? not exactly very relaxing for client............any thoughts on this anyone??

I have always worked to music unless the client specifically says they prefer silence (which has happened once in the last 5 years). The music helps the client to relax and also makes the session more enjoyable for us both.
I have a stereo in my treatment room and for my mobile visits I have a little walkman cd player attached to 2 small speakers. It all fils into a box which is inside my mobile kit along with my cd's, just in case the client doesn't have a stereo (also it's much easier to use my own since I'm not very good with other peoples')!

Talking of playing music during a therapy session - does it constitute a 'public' performance and hence wouldn't you need a licence?

As I understand it, the answer is yes it is a public performance, and yes you should have a PRS license. You can buy music which doesn't need a license. I have a number of CD's I bought from a composer in Cornwall and as he composes, produces, records it all himself, I have his express permission to use his music in my therapy sessions wherever they take place. If working in a spa, health centre, gym etc, the owners should have a license for the premises. The PRS targets specific areas of business from time to time, say garages, hairdressers, restaurants, etc. It is presumably difficult for them to police, but it is worth being sure where you stand as a therapist, were they to check your own business.

My understanding from the days when I had a PRS licence (I ran a pub) is that you only need a PRS licence if you're playing in a public place. If you're going to your client's house a licence is not necessary. However, if you're in a clinic, or if music is playing in the waiting room, a licence is required.

Like Sparkie, I only use music that I have permission to use in a therapy room environment. As a hypnotherapist, I record my sessions to CD for the client to repeat the sessions and I also have permission to use the music for this as well (an absolute must as you are technically reproducing the music). Search the net for "royalty free" music as this is the safest way to stay within the law without paying out for licenses etc.

As I was fined for playing a CD in the classroom whilst doing a practical session, - I did not have a PRS - but thought that the college would have!! when I visit clients - they choose the music and play it on their equipment in their house.
My student at the time was a PRS licence issuer. He waited until the end of the term and then informed me I had illegally played music for 22hours and thirteen minutes. I always thought there was something 'odd' about him - there was he wore a Gold Lame thong.

Such a shame there's no concept of entrapment in English law because that's what you could call this. Of course, as a licence issuer he is duty bound to inform you of any infringement as soon as he becomes aware of it. Shame he's no longer a student of yours. He could lose his job for something like this.
