Priming for labour

Hi folks, don't know about you but I've had three calls this week from ladies whose babies are overdue and they have heard that reflexology may help to get things started. It is really good that members of the public are getting information about therapies and their benefits, but part of me wonders why they didn't have a course of reflexology during their pregnancy to help them prepare for birth and ease some of those pregnancy niggles. How do we get that messaget across to people? I feel a bit sad when something like reflexology is viewed just as a quick fix or a means to an end, when it is a marvellous thing for mums to be and their babies to experience.

On another note, I know reflexologists who won't treat people who phone up asking for priming for labour treatments, because they haven't worked with them before and don't fully understand their history and any potential contraindications or complications.

hi siobhan,[/align][/align]couldnt agree with you more... i've "primed" many labours and i do find it slightly irritating that yes, "i hear reflexology is good for that - after i tried the hot curry, hot bike ride and hot sex, which didnt work" .[/align][/align]my info is at my local anti natal clinic and i get no one until priming is required. the midwives see us a last resort too, i feel [:-].[/align][/align]anyway... i guess word will get round eventually eh![/align][/align][/align]

I agree with you, and although I don't refuse to treat I do always tell these late in the day clients that they would have been better prepared with a course of Reflex (in the hope they will remember for their next baby!) One day the message may get through.

In the meanwhile I am setting a good example by having Reflex, and acupuncture, throughout my own pregnancy (due in Sept!!!!!!! )

I started a thread about trying to attract pregnant clients as my supply has dried up. I wondered if you had many pregnant women come to you but it seems that you have a lot of women who are overdue.

Itis quite difficult to crack this but one that i am determined to let women know the benefits of this one.

Hi Chickenlicken, I saw your other post but didn't get round to replying to it as time was against me. The big thing is word of mouth and I found that once one lady came, she told her pregnant friends and they came too. I do an offer for the pregnant ladies where after 4 treatments they get one free. It seems to be a real incentive. The midwives and preg yoga teachers tell their ladies about me, but even so I get quiet spells where no pregnant ladies come along. It's a funny old game!

wonder if you could advise me, one of my client's is pregnant coming upto the 12th week and she would like to start reflexology again my only concern is that in the last 18months she has had an ectopic pregnancy and also a miscarriage(9 week)she is being treated as "normal" at the hospital but I have advised her to speak to her midwife before commencing with the reflexology this will be her 3rd child by the way.

Should I leave it a little longer before treating her??????

My supply of pregnant clients has increased due to going out into the big wide world and doing presentations.
One of them was a lady who was 40 + 7 and had not had any maternity reflexologytreatments during her pregnancy.
I did go and treat her and she had her baby two days later but that is all i know.
As i dont know when her contractions started, how do i know if what i did helped kick start the latent stage. I mean, how long would you leave it until you think, OK well that time it didn't work and maybe another treatment is needed?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi Ladies
I think I have an obsession - with oils! I am not an aromatherapist and I wondering whether you used oils on your pregnant ladies. As we all know there is so much controversy about what oils to use/not to use.
I was told at my reflexology course it is ok to treat anyone including pregnant ladies with essential oils - the citrus ones are the best for pregnant ladies and those trying to conceive, but Denise Tiran and Laura Norman (Most of you know are very well know experience reflexologists/Denise is also a Midwife and has been for 30 years), are saying different things.
I am hoping to do this caring for pregnant clients course soon and actually toying with the idea of whether to do the Suzanne Enzers course instead (!!??) but Denise says to steer away from oils unless you know what you are doing. I have bought about 9 oils now and feel I have wasted my money. I am doing holistic facials and am confused now about which ones to use on the face too!
Why am I obsessing about oils! Maybe I just want my clients to have a choice and to smell nice and to feel a little more relaxed or does it not matter about the oils!
Like CL I will hide behind the couch and eat digestives! [sm=hidesbehindsofa.gif]

Sounds like you have a calling to do an aromatherapy course. Essential oils are very potent (that's why they work), but similarly can be dangerous when used incorrectly, or where they are contraindicated.
