Yes good read.....especially for newbies......should be mandatory for newbies to read prior to stepping inside LOS, even though the story is probably over cooked.

Ihave read bucket loads of stories on this forum and Stickman, and yes l think it is overcooked bcoz l don't think any one man could be so F***kin daft !......just my opinion, but l do agree it is a good read......and yes, Thai girls, not just bar girls are Gold Medalists when it comes to telling porkies.

I agree.. It tends to concentrate every mistake and every issue into one relationship.. I am sure many Thai vets of the bar scene will have seen all these issues in thier time but to have all these issues and to make all these mistakes in one relationship seems a bit much.

I also thought it was a bit amaturely written (and **** why bother printing those awful recipies) and made an attempt at a multi narrative a la Irvin Wlesh and transpotting but without much flair.. The additional (in fact all) the characters were more charicatures of people than real world IMHO.. Only the 2 main characters (despite the molodrama) rang true and somehow I left it with far more sense of sympathy and understanding of Joys character than I did of Petes..

Those negatives aside, its well worth a read at that price but... No one else seems to have mentioned.. The story starts with Pete killing Joy... Without spoiling the ending look where it morphs to !!! Did no one else seem to spot this HUGE plot f_ckup !!!! Makes no damn sense at all !!! (though I did read it in one late night session drinking whisky and eating xanex so I should give it another going over)...

I hear it will be soon published in Bangkok minus the recipes and with some minor changes and an update on the life of the main characters since the events.

story.
But how many of these situations can you feel have happened to you (hope not the murder)or heard about on this forum.

Pretty much all of them to different people at different times...

Had the girl you cant get rid off.. Had the amphet ya baa takers.. Seen the cut themselves girls (scary).. Seen the love at first sight.. Seen many many times people wanting the girl without wanting to make the jump and move or marry her.

But thats spreading single stories out over many people.. Of course he has to sell books so..

Deffo worth a read.. Increases the cynic in you which is required sometimes (though I still say it did not make me feel bad about Joy too much)..

For Thai stories and fiction try..

Chris Moore (Christopher G Moore is easier for amazon) sueforum.xxx character realizations and settings.. Reading it just smells like 5am Thermae 5 years ago.. A Killing smile is highly reccomended as is all his stuff IMHO.

Also try Mad Dog and Co by Chart Korpjitti... bunch of young Thai good for nothings who smoke herb, drink whisky etc..

Recently Enjoyed Graham Greene's The quiet American.. Tend to enjoy Greenes writing as its often melancholy and has no real hero's.. People are people and shades of gray not good and bad, black and white.. This evoked Pre war Vietnam nicely IMHO (for sopmeone who never experienced it)..

Anyone else have Thai or Asian based authors that ring true ??

The same books for me except the last one. Furthermore some others from Chart Korbjitti-The judgement. Story about a smart young thai boy who is loved by everybody but due to the heard it trough the grapevine totally destroyed by his comunity. Goes from worse to just living hell.

Bangkok agogo by John Hall about an american soldier whogoes for R&R to thailand but goes AWOL.

Fast Eddy`s lucky 7 a go go by David Young. An expat who wants a bar and a girl who want to become his TG because than she can become mamasan. Lots of lies and rip offs by the girl.

Skytrain to murder by Dean Barret. Ex CIA man who`s retired in Thailand and do some detective works for everybody who wants it. From innocent research to murder in the high classes of Thailand.

Hello my big big honey by Dave Walker and S. Ehrlich. About love letters send by farangs to BG`s

One small book about a priest who goes living in the slums of Bangkok to help the people there. All small stories of the things he encountered (rape, drugs, killings etc.)

And the best one I`ve read recently is Smiles of Deciet by Jim Cornick. About a guy who takes a job in Thailand. from legal to illegal work. And that all for a first imer to thailand. Great ending.

The life of Father XXXXX (cant remember but he is the Pattaya slum priest who started the orphanges who then got slandered by the UK press for sensatonalist child abuse charges that turned out false) was reviewed in the Gazette.. I would like to give that a read. Pattaya evolving from a sleepy beachside fishing village etc..

Of course theres also the 'Hello Sexy man' 'Money Number 1' etc guide books that are worth a newbies time..

the rest on amazon.com has anyone used them are they o/k ?

Books in Thailand tend to be pricy.. Especially Phuket where selection is limited..

Amazon used to be great as they had a 1.99 worldwide shipping and they used to sneak through customs.. Now the cost of Amazon + shipping + customs + time delay makes it awkward..

The stuff printed by Asia Press (Hello my big Honey.. Off the rails in Phom Phen.. Money number 1... etc) will tend to be cheaper and available (and in second hand bookshops also as travellers leave them)...

Theres quite a bit of the Chris Moore detective stuff I have not read but I priced it up on Amazon and figured it cost too much.. Next time I am in BKK I will get them.

Couple of years ago they were selling Chris Moore`s books at some bars in Nana plaza. Pretty cheap overthere. And somewhere near Patpong area (5 minut walk) there`s a bookstore (forgot the name) they have most off the titles mentioned above overthere. and in the other direction there`s a smal second hand bookstore wich has many titles but unfortunately most off them are all written in Thai. A buy the books at this site http://www.dcothai.com/. I just wait a couple off months mostly and then buy alot for the shippingcosts etc.

I bought "Hello My Big Big Honey" a few years ago at Asian Books on Sukhumvit Road a few years ago. Now it's also published in other languages (ie. French). Although it may be funny at the beginning, this book becomes quickly boring.
"No Money, No Honey" is worth it (it describes the sex scene in Singapore).
I had the opportunity to meet one time Dean Barret in Bangkok but I haven't read any of his books so far.

I read 'Forget you had a Daughter' by Sandra Gregory, the English woman who got caught smuggling heroin out of Thailand, a great read.

I also brought home a couple of Christopher G Moore offerings and, whilst the stories and characters are terrific, the standard of grammar and the amount of typos really spoil them for me. A decent read though, and I have never seen them in the UK so quite a cool thing to have on your bookshelf

I really enjoyed the "green mango". Good story, special caracters! It is more a investigation - story!

I really turned the pages very fast with this one! i started also a book From Moore, the Minor wife, who looked quit good. Unfortunally, I never read much here, but in March i will finish it!
