Questions about oil

Question #1- What kind of oil do you use to massage with?

Question #2- For those that make body scrubs, what kind of oil works the best?

I make my own scrubs, and have been using Lotus Touch Massage Oil, and a classmate told me today that Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or plain old canola oil will do the same thing, and costs much less. She also said that she uses canola oil to massage with. Is canola or EVOO the same as "massage oil"?

Edit I shouldn't have answered until I had more time. The answer above is for the third question you asked, "Is canola or EVOO the same as "massage oil"?"

Longer answer: Oils are oils. Some are a lot healthier for your skin than others; some are more easily absorbed than others.

Canola and EVOO, or any food-grade oil from the kitchen is healthier for the skin than, say... baby oil. Now, some people "take" mineral oil, but this should not be confused with food-grade oil which is an oil you'd cook with or put on a salad.

I am one of many that say Do Not Use Baby Oil or Mineral Oil for massage. It is mass-produced and cheap to make because it is petroleum-based. It's not good for the skin.

Good "Massage oils" that you buy from massage/spa suppliers have been formulated to be easily absorbed. They will not contain petroleum-based products. They will usually be lighter (less thick) than pantry items and may have botanicals added to make them even healthier for the skin. Are they better for massage? t102 I think it is a personal choice; you can add essential oils or other botanicals to canola oil to make it healthier if you like the feel of that oil.

Question #2: For scrubs I use a lighter base oil and a couple drops of an essential oil appropriate to the client's needs.

I use pure jojoba for my massage. But I don't do any scrubs, so I can't help you with that one.

Keep in mind that most of the food oils will stain sheets and clothing, where jojoba and some of the specially formulated oils won't, or arenot supposed to stain. I guess with a scrub, this is not an issue, is it.

I use jojoba for my massage. I don't do scrubs either so can't help there.

I use pure jojoba oil almost exclusivly to do massage, although I make a couple of lotion/oil/ essential oil blends for special circumstances like rough, dry, cracked feet, dry winter skin, etc. Jojoba is, according to the advertisements, the vegetable oil closest to human sebum, so it is good for the skin, moisturizing, and very well tolerated by most people. It washes out of sheets and clothing with hot water ( and a hot rinse!) better than most. IF you don't get carried away and use too much, it absorbs well and doesn't leave the client greasy. I, also, must be a freak of nature, because grapeseed oil leaves my hands feeling very dry and itchy.( and makes my sheets smelly after a while without heroic measures.)
Last Christmas I made scrubs as gifts and used jojoba oil as the base. Made some for myself, too, and really liked it. Left my skin very soft, and washed off easily. I tried both salt and sugar scrubs, and I personally liked the sugar better. ( and maybe easier on the septic tank than all that salt) ( Do be carefull when using oil-based products in the tub or shower, they make the floor VERY slick!!!!)

I don't use oil in massages, I use cream.

For scrubs, I use jojoba oil mostly as it has a longer shelf life than most oils and is great for the skin. I also use sweet almond oil. If you are going to make scrubs to give as gifts, samples or sell, it's always good to add some sort of preservative like Liquipar or Germaben. That way if someone puts a wet hand into the container, the water won't cause beasties. LOL!

Concerning making scrubs for gifts, I use polyaminopropyl biguanide which is a preservative that is so gentle it's used in contact lens cleaner. Also, I make them using grapeseed oil in the base as grapeseed is the least slippery of all the oils in the shower.

Haven't made scrubs for work yet, I use the Biotone cream scrub since it doesn't fly everywhere like the salt and sugar (I work in a dry room). But it is a goal of mine to make scrubs for use at work!

I use only Jojoba oil for massage.

When I do make up a scrub it is usually with the jojoba.
I don't think it's worth making scrubs for retail - I would recommend buying wholesale from another source. Better selection, packaging, and less headaches for you!

EVOO and canola oils are not massage oils and I would not use them as I do not like the consistency of either. Plus the issue of staining and going rancid.
