reflex assignment, teacher says its wrong! help

hey guys,

i have completed all my assignments but the reproductive system. i got a few questions wrong but my friend in the same class had the same answers and got them rite! jus wonderin cud u help me with the questions cos im actually quite confused.

Q1. when do gonads become active? - i wrote - form puberty until menopause.
Q2. name the male gonads? - i wrote - testes, ducts, penis, prostate and seminal vesicle.
Q3. explain how the position of the testes assists with the process of reproduction? - i wrote - testes, mature sperm, seminal vesicle, prostate gland and wrote a bit about these.


jus hope u's can give me some rite direction for these questions cos i dont understand how she got them rite and i got them wrong.

Hi Jenna

Two things come to mind.

Firstly, you must go back to your tutor and ask what the problem was if you don't understand. There has to be an appeals procedure if you are not happy: tell your tutor you want to go to appeal and ask how you do that.

Secondly, make sure you are writing in English and not txtese! I find your posts very hard to read, and if you submit written work like that in the college I teach, you will fail. End of story. So always check your work for spellings and grammar (make sure you can read it aloud, like a newsreader).

thanks for the advice, i will get back to my tutor and see whats going on! also i dont see what the second advice has got to do with my question, just wondering why you put that in when i didnt ask about my writing and i know when im doing writing in college or anywhere else i write in full, im not stupid. but when it comes to writing on the internet, i dont see why i should spend so much time writing in full.

but im taking your advice into consideration, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. hope you can see ive wrote every word in full. lol

ChrisRams was perfectly justified in asking you not to use 'text speak' when posting on Healthypages.

It is quite common practice for other members, or moderators, to ask members ... especially those newer to the forums ... to refrain from using this form of abbreviation in their posts, and that is what we normally do. How you may write elsewhere on the internet is not at issue here.

Thank you for making the above post conform more closely to 'proper' written English, and may I ask that you continue to do so on our forums.

thanks for getting back to me. I posted what I did because, in my experience as a teacher in further and higher education, two students can give the same or similar answers and the marks can be quite different purely because of the way the answer was written. I'm sure you're not stupid, but I can only advise on the basis of what I see in front of me at the time. What I saw at the time made me wonder if your standard of written English could have been what had let you down.

Remember, Jenna, we are always judged on what people see in front of them. I can only see what you write for each post and so that is the basis of my judgment. That is why I try and write complete English sentences, so that anyone can understand the point I'm trying to get across. When you're writing you don't have the body language to help you get your point across, so you have to be very precise as to what you want to say.

I'm not trying to put you down and I'm sure you are a good student. It's just the little things that can make all the difference!

Did you also mention the bit about temperature and being outside the body assists viability of sperm etc.?

Just a thought as Q3 specifically asks about position.

i understand where your coming from so ill take that in mind and make more of an effort to write in full. and also i dont write in text speak for assignments and stuff so i must of left something out just. but thanks again for the heads up!

Nice to see you are writing in full now. It makes such a difference but just one thought. Do you think you could start using capital letters as well? They would make your posts look even better.

You'd need to mention that men don't go throught the menopause; so that's only accurate for 1/2 the population; you've also mis-understood the question, as it only asks when they become active, not when they become inactive. Basically you've answered a question that wasn't asked.

Just the testes; listing the others implies that you've mis-understood the subject matter (again, you've answered a question that wasn't asked).

Depends on what you wrote about these; we can't critique your answer unless we know what your answer was I'm afraid. I wouldn't be surprised if you wrote about the process of reproduction, or the testes role in that; rather than specifically about how their position assists the process. That's just a guess though

Whilst we ask that members do not use text speak on the forums (to allow for all members from around the world to be able to read posts) we certainly would not stipulate that members must be gramatically correct or must start sentances with capitals and we accept that not all members are english speaking or that they may experience difficulty in writing for whatever reason.

sorry that you are feeling that it is you that is being picked on. I'm sure that's not the intention.

I just thought that I'd add my agreement to BIA pointing out the need to answer the question. We've probably all done it at some point, I know I have and I was marked down for giving too much info and straying from the point. I know when working with nursing students that if I'm assessing say a clinical skill I like to hear an answer specific to the question I am asking, otherwise I will wonder if they have understood the question and hence the skill or other aspect of care.
