Reflexology and IVF

Hi everyone,

I'm a new member of the forum qualified in Reflexology, training in Swedish Body massage and almost their in Reiki. I think this site is fabulous so far and it seems just what I'm looking for.

I am currently advertising in yellow pages as a reflexologist but have not had much work out of it - lots of people trying to sell me stuff! I did get one client who was due to start IVF and had read of the benefits of reflexology. I researched the subject and started the treatment but sent a referral letter to her clinic prior to her starting the treatment. They advised her against going ahead with the treatment. I believe they would have allowed it had I not sent them a form asking for a signature (have had confirmation from my insurer that a signed record of the client's version of discussion with medical professional is adequate, contrary to what I was taught in college. This will work better I feel as I know I would not sign something giving permission for an unproved treatment - why should they?

Anyway, sorry to be so long winded. I am just very interested in any experience any of you have had in this field. I have read the posts on sub-fertility with great interest and am now off to Amazon to order those books on linking and vertical reflexology. You all seem really supportive and responsive and I look forward to future discussions - got a feeling I'm going to learn more here than anywhere else.

I dont write to GP's for permission for anything, but explain the process to the client and get them to sign a 'permission to treat' on the consultation form. We all know the contra's and 'donts'.

There have been lots of posts re whether and when to treat for fertility. I know the concensus is now that reflexology is ok anytime, and I will treat if I think its appropriate and I feel comfortable with it.

I have to say that I have decided not to give reflexology to anyone having IVF now, as the hormones are so disturbed and the outcome so important that its best not too. I will offer IHM and a cup of tea and a chat to my clients having it, and treat in between attempts if they wish. I keep in touch with them as I like to know how they are, you get very attached to them.

With Clomid, I would probably treat in the first half of the menstrual cycle, but not post ovulation, until they have their period.

I do write to GP's requesting help for the client if I think my client would benefit and with their permission. I had a good result recently for one of my elderly ladies who was being neglected. (GP visited her next day). Elderly folk often need an 'advocate' if their family aren't around.

Hi Iceni,

thanks for getting back so soon. I know what you are saying about the hormones being all over the place but people are having a great deal of success working with the treatment, ie avoiding areas during certain phases of the treatment. I would love to hear more about it - I find the whole issue fascinating.

What do you do when a client has a contra-indication - lots of people will be undertaking medical treatment for example.

I think I am going to become addicted to this site!

I tend to 'screen' major contra's by asking clients, when they phone for appointments, a few questions. Ie athletes foot, dvt's, cancer etc. and get some idea of what their problems are. it helps you too in case you need to do some research (on here probably) and check your books etc.

For fertility, I always make it clear that I am treating them holistically and aim for hormone balancing for the first couple of months, rather than just conception. It seems to make them a bit more relaxed and takes the pressure off a bit. They also feel they are doing something positive. I also always advise them to see their GP's to get some simple tests underway, ie are they ovulating and sperm counts etc, it saves them time in the long run and again is pro-active.

I tend to advise treating the 'Dads' too if pos these days. ( See other fertility posts) the poor things get quite stressed too and it helps their hormones.
