reflexology client

Does anyone have a client which they dread going to? I have one every thursday morning and she seems to drain me no matter what I do. She talks consistently and I can't shut her up. I tried the two precision reflexology points on her (not sure I did it correctly though) and still she 'gabbled' on. She is just sooooo negative about everything.

I know I shouldn't feel like this as it is a client but I am really beginning to dread going to her.

Is that the sacrum forebrain link by any chance Yasmin? I should think most therapists have a person who talks and talks, and maybe you're her only chance to do that. You don't really have to listen intently to what she says, you can nod and smile in places. If you feel she's taking your energy the only thing I can think of is grounding and shielding techniques. If it's really getting you down to work with her maybe you aren't right for each other, so to speak. Not every therapist and client will 'gel'.

Its difficult especially when you are trying to build up your client base, I had one of these fairly early on and in the end managed to persuade her that reflex was not the appropritate therapy at the moment and whilst i was happy to see her she should give that some thought,,,,,she did book in again but cancelled before the appointment was due......she took so much from me i was sad to lose a client but very very relieved.

Hi you two.........hope you are both well!!!

It is not that we don't Gel Siobhan, she really seems to like me and looks forward to the treatments. She lost her husband last year and I think she is very lonely and is a bit of a recluse so I should feel honoured really that she lets me 'in'. I generally put myself in a bubble before a treatment but find this near-on impossible. Those were the links i meant but can you explain them a little more fully for me to make sure I have the right places?

She not only has the Reflex but likes a full body aroma afterwards which means I am there well over two hours and that is not counting the time she keeps me talking afterwards I am not sure that the reflex is doing anything for her but I have managed to get rid of the fluid in her ankles (obviously one of my specialities). She has told me that she intends to have the treatments until the day she dies and that as I do a wonderful facial and make her skin look really good she says I can DO her in her coffin...........might give that one a miss!!!!!!!

Surely not every therapist enjoys doing every treatment!!!

Hi Yasmin. You won't always want to do everybody, but you just get on with it.

The linking you are talking about: You need to fiddle around and make sure you are on the right spot. You will know when you are as you will 'feel' it quite strongly and also she should shut up! Place your thumb on one hand over the pad of the large toe and with the other hand drop down from the ankle bone on to L5, apply a bit of pressure until you feel the little bone there. Move around slightly until you feel the connection. Once you have it you will know it, but you need to search for it on different people.

Try an oil to shut her up! I think off the top of my head Cypress is for talkative people and that has worked too. Or you could really knock her out with Clary Sage mixed with Marjoram and lavender, maybe a drop more than usual?

The other things to do are:

Tell her to shut up! Seriously. When you start the treatment, say something like "please don't feel you need to talk to me when I treat you, the best way to relax is to close your eyes and not talk at all." She will probably tell you she likes talking to you! But you have made your point and then I would not answer back when she talks, just give a nod, an 'um' and an 'oh'. etc.

Thing is though, she is paying you for the treatment and at the end of the day if she needs to talk then let her.

Hi Yasmin

It sounds like this client is taking a lot out you. Have you thought about taking a break from her?
I know that it is hard to take a break from a client, who obviously you feel needs your treatment. But as a therapist you need to keep yourself healthy and put yourself first.

Also it would make your client realise that she has to learn to deal with things in her own way and learn to cope without your energy.

It would be cruel to just cut yourself off from her without advising her on some coping techniques, and maybe trying to get her to look at life more positively. But after that why not give yourself a break from her for a few weeks.

Silverwings, with all respect I just don't think it is anybody's job to advise people to look at life more positively. You can encourage and support by all means, yes, but at the end of the day people have to get their own acts together and deal with their own stuff and I don't think you can do this with some people. Sorry, not meaning to be rude, but I have known people in the past who I have tried to do this with and they still go their own sweet way!

Thank you Silverwings for your reply but without knowing the person herself it is very difficult to offer advise. She is a very lonely 75 year old who had nursed her husband during many years of mental illness and now she finds herself very much alone. She is a very articulate, well educated women and enjoys good conversation but is inclined to live in the past, which I suppose is quite understandable. She has a great deal of ailments and drinks very heavily.........I can't blame her, what else has she left. I DO think she values the treatments and they are doing her some good so I will persevere for the moment. After all the problem is with me not with her. I just need to try and get her to relax a little more.

It sounds as though you are helping this lady quite a lot Yasmin. I agree that not every treatment is enjoyable but it is good that your client is getting so much of out them. Obviously a job well done in spite of your misgivings!

How odd....when your posting came up I was on the Jan Williamson site. On there the book's RRP is £15.99. Just searching for the publishers on google......quite a difference in price. I notice also that they run courses on it so have given them a ring to see if they are running any this year (left message on answerphone).

I am feeling a little better about this client now and you are right she is getting a great deal out of the treatments and it was great to off-load and get feedback about it. Perhaps I am feeling so much better about it as I had a client from hell this week (details on therapy board). I still haven't got over it.

I'll let you know if I hear anything about the courses in Exeter............I might have to pass your door to pick up my muffin snacks on the way down

All the way through reading this I have been thinking Bach flower remedies - 2 in particular

Honeysuckle - for living in the past , both nostalgia and not being able to move on

and

Heather - for some one who talks non-stop about their own concerns and can be very draining


if she is open to complementary therapies like reflexology she might also be open to trying some Flower Remedies - you can even take them in a cup of tea so quite palatable!! obviously you need to think about how to introduce these not always easy to suggest someone talks too much!

and maybe you need some walnut, Yasmin to protect yourself.

when i bought the book i got it with the VRT by lynne booth for 30 quid or so the two. yes it is expensive... small print runs i suppose. but i would recommend the book. have a look on ebay... i know the lynne booth book comes up from time to time.

Have you done her course? She has just rang me back and said that she is offering a new course in September (2 days) and then a follow up in November (another 2 days). The cost for all 4 days is going to be £195.00. This is a mid-week course. She will arrange weekend courses for 8 people. There is B & B accommodation for £27.00 per night.

I am seriously thinking about it........anyone else interested?

I'm interested Yasmin! thing is, I will be doing my IHM studying and case studies in September, and I'm also waiting to hear about a Suzanne Enzer course, so I would probably be thinking more along the lines of December or January. So many courses, so little time! I'll email Jan to see if she's planning later courses. It would be lovely to meet HP people there, wouldn't it?

I think it is a great idea...........would be nicer than just a 'meet'. Apparently it is two days in september and then you have to do some case studies etc and then back in November to finish off the course, which I think is a great idea and you would be able to get all your questions answered and feel really confident about it.

As I said she will arrange a special course for 8 people anyway...........so if there was enough of us we would be ok

Would love to do it, but what with the travelling, it would probably be more like six days, so I would have to cost in lost work, plus the minimum charge room rental I pay to one of my clinics.

I've also just enrolled for an advanced reflexology course in Understanding and Treating Female Problems on 12th September at Evadell, so would want to do it at another time.
