Reflexology - the most popular therapy

We went to a local Village Fair today to promote our Centre. There was me, Andrew (Anahata, the osteopath) and our new reflexogist. I took my couch and we offered massage, IHM and reflexolgy.

Reflexology won hands down. When people saw us doing it there was all sorts of comments. 'I have always wanted to try that.' 'Oh look, reflexology.' 'I must have a relaxing treatment,' 'i have got to have a go', 'this is THE best treatment', etc etc.

They kept us really busy and in my mind there is no doubt that this is the most popular treatment. I only qualified in January but already have lots of regular clients and it has overtaken my aroma clients and I have to say I like it the best.

It's also less tiring to do than Aromatherapy!

its my favourite too, which is why i am spending more time enhancing my skills with it rather than learn more therapies at this time. i've sort of decided that i dont want to be a jack of all trades... its not getting me anywhere!

on the other bit re tasters at fetes, i think its easier for people to try reflex than a massage... only shoes and socks off!

Sounds as though you had a fun time Caroline.....did you take Carol with you?

I am doing a 4-day exhibition this week....Wednesday to Saturday. It is a yearly event called Taste of the Town. I am going to offer taster sessions of Reflexology and maybe Indian Head............not sure yet.

I am just putting together a small consultation form. Did you get people to fill in a form and if so what contra-indications did you pop down?

I am going to leave a form on the table showing time slots and ask people to fill in their name in the appropriate slot............not sure whether this will work or not...........soon find out. I thought about 20 minutes a session. Did you charge by the way?

i did the timetable thing and it does work quite well as long as people are aware its there!!

i also got people to sign a small disclaimer, just saying they had no health probs or leave a space for them to indicate what they do have.

We were that busy getting all the literature printed inbetween clients on Friday that I totally forgot about a disclaimer form!

It was all very casual. We got the stall for free as we donated all the money to the Church.

We just charged £2.50 for ten mins, but think we could have got more. It was only for promotional purposes, not to earn money.

Yes, Carol did come and I am chuffed to bits that she has joined us. She really shows commitment and can work as a team. Something that is sadly lacking in other therapists I am sad to say.[:'(]

When we do events at the clinic I work at we charge £5 for 15 minutes. It gives you time to take an albeit brief case history and work on what they think are the problem areas, or the head, sinuses and digestion (since I'm in East London, where the pollution is horrible).

But I'm interested in people saying that reflexology is the most popular therapy. For us it seems to be IHM. And there was one open day at the clinic where I did nothing but Reiki for the entire day! Where I am, reflexology is seen as something nice you have at the end of a pedicure. Slowly changing the attitudes, but it's a slog. Any suggestions welcome

Sara and I are doing tasters at Churchfields School fete in Woodford on Saturday, so your post was very interesting Candie. (perhaps not too far from you Lynne?). I have done one MBS thing but it wasn't very well attended, although I was fairly busy. Good opportunity to promote therapies though.

On the whole I prefer reflex as its less tiring, so I'm glad its more popular. I find I prefer feet to some heads, is that strange? Also short hairs reasonably easy but long hair is a bit of a challenge.

I find people quite like the IHM as an add on to reflex, but have got my first IHM only appt this week. ( Think I'll do a short reflex treatment too, to demonstrate).

I was wondering about the time sheet thing. I was worried in case people put their names down and then dont come back. Did that happen to you? My daughter has offered to be receptionist so that will help hopefully.

We will probably charge £5 per 15minutes, so they can book for 30 mins if they want.

Just hope the weather is kind.

Any ohter advice very welcome.

I did one at my daughter's school the other week - reflexology tasters. I also had a time slot thing for people to write their names (but title it 'Full Name' as the first one put their first name only and all the others copies - no good for mailing list!). I also made them pay their money at the time of booking.

Good luck with Churchfields Jan. I donated a treatment voucher for their Christmas Fete, but have heard nothing since!!

No distance at all Jan, since I'm in Highams Park. I did a ladies indulgence evening at the Jewish Primary School in Ilford last year and we just put a list up on the wall and people added their names. Not a single no-show, so it does work. If you're going to have someone taking bookings, getting people to pay when they book should guarantee they come for their treatment.

Small problem at the moment as I've pulled a muscle in my left thumb, pulling ivy off the garden fence (d'oh!) and I've got a full day on Thursday. Does that count as an industrial injury do you suppose?

I really don't enjoy IHM very much. I just did the course as people do ask, but it is my least favourite therapy although people really enjoy it. They usually only come for a one off though I find.

I did a guy's head at the fair whilst Carol did his feet. Yuk, he had dandruff. Didn't encourage me much.[:'(]

The hair thing can be a problem. Greasy scalps, unwashed hair, smelly heads, dandruff, long matty hair, shiny bald heads. Um. Maybe this is why I don't like it much. Oh and then there is gel! Try getting you fingers through that![&:]

I qualified in Indian Head nearly two years ago and I can honestly say that I haven't done a treatment since. I enjoyed the course but really wasn't keen on the treatment itself. The only saving grace is that it gave me the impetus to go on and do other therapies.

I am not fond of hair, especially body hair and the smell of greasy hair is absolutely disgusting and right under your nose....yuck!!!!!

Atleast with Reflexology you clean the feet first and if they are really bad you can always put them in a foot spa. I wasn't very keen on the idea of feet at first but they have certainly grown on me. Reflex and Aromatherapy are by far my favourites.

Talking of hair, and probably going slightly off topic, I gave an aromatherapy treatment to a man on Friday. I explained that I finish the treatment by massaging the face and head and he explained that he had a hairpiece and would rather I left his head (I have massaged women with wigs in the past who have just been happy to remove them, but I think glue and toupee tape make things a bit more difficult).

I actually thought that his hairpiece was quite good, until he laid down and the rug didn't!! When I did his face, I couldn't massage anywhere near his hairline as I was concscious of it feeling so unnatural and moving things around. Still, the client was happy!!

Can you tell me more about the facial rejuvenation? (sp?) It's for a friend of mine - ha ha!!! Seriously, am interested in it as a treatment for others, though if I lose a few crinkles in the process then great.

Panicky, I'm not sure if you mean to wear rubber gloves for treatments. Did you do that while training? It would be unusual, you should use wipes etc, unless they have a bad problem with fungal infection, in which case you should politely decline to treat them.
I've only tried treating with gloves once, due to fungal infection, and it didnt work!! Istill treated the client but used the cream on my hands after, but wouldnt ncessarily recommend it.

As to being an apprentice, if you are qualified now, you dont need to be. Just work on your confidence with friends and family if you are nervous. Unfortunately most of us dont get enough clients to share with an apprentice.

It will be a good opportunity on Saturday, you can give out cards and leaflets.

Lynne, sorry to hear about your thumb, a reflexologists nightmare!!

Dear Panicky (you have got to change that name!) Just go for it. Remember you know about it than prospective clients! And no, do not use gloves!

I had a lady at the fair with a verrucae and I just avoided the area.

I found that I had repeat clients right away. Reflexology, it seems, it quick to build up. I got more clients this way than through aromatherapy and massage and a lot do like my massages and I have helped with pain etc. They will come back a couple of times a week for two or three weeks and then be better, but with reflex, they keep coming!

Interesting what you say about reflex and IHM - I have a bout a 50/50 split of clients for these too. And I do LOVE giving IHM , I find it much more relaxing to give than Reflexology , I also find that clients get much more into IHM ( i.e. they drift off and are in quite another world by the end of the treatment) They don't feel obliged to talk , which some reflex clients do , as they are sitting facing you ( Happens more in a Lafuma and less when they are on the massage couch , practically lying down) But for both I get repeat business

IHM is also very good to do at fairs as they don't even need to take their shoes and socks off.

Thing I have done the fewst treatments of and fewest rebookings,is straight massage, (might be me!![sm=sad2.gif]
