Reflexology

I am considering doing a reflexology course this year. In 'discussions' with other family members the following queries have come up:

What kind of room is acceptable to a client? I was thinking of the conservatory which isn't massive-but then too hot in summer, too cold in winter? Obviously my partner would be at home so the lounge would be out. I also have a daughter but planned to carry out treatments while she was sleeping. If you take your treatment to the client is it any easier? Also if you have a reflexology business did you get clients easily? Did it take a long time to build up a client base? I currently work three days a week and was looking to do some treatments when my daughter starts school, so possibly between 10-2pm. Any advice would be helpful,

I won't bother with a conservatory that is too difficult to regulate the temperature.

Some clients prefer to visit a clinical room, some prefer to be visited.

10am to 2pm is quite realistic, but it's also good to offer at least one evening a week (or even the occasional Saturday) for clients that work full time.

It can take time to build up a client base, typically 2 years. Doing reflexology as a part time form of income is fine. There isn't mega bucks in it though and very few therapists just make a living from just reflexology. The job satisifaction can be really good.

I agree with Reiki Pixie's answers.
I was asking all those questions 4-5 years ago when I was training!

You may need to look into hiring a suitable room locally, if you haven't got one at home that can be private.

I found that everyone is enthusiastic to be a "guinea pig" when you are training, but not quite so keen when it comes to being a formal, paying client.

Knowing where to advertise to be most effective is also a continual headache. Luckily my OH is brill at creating that side of it so it saves us alot of money!!

Having said that, Reflexology is really rewarding to do. If you have researched how many there already are in your area then you will know if it is worth pursuing .

It is very hard when you are just starting. Depending on where you live it is wise to check out with your local council if you have to have a licence to practice from your home. A good Reflexology course, AoR, BRCP, will include business advice and code of conduct for giving treatments.

Please do not under estimate the course either. A one year course is very hard going and we had to undertake at least 60 treatments of these were 6 case studies (6 x 6 treatments). These we could not charge for. They all have to be written up and researched, plus A and P and homework.

As Gaiaholistix says it is easy to get guinea pigs to have their treatment for free. During this time though, you get to see how it is going to people's houses to give treatments.

I must say though that is does not sound ideal if you are relying on your daughter to go to sleep while you give treatments. What if she were to wake up while you had a client in the house?

I don't wish to put you off and it is lovely giving the treatments but my client base is zero at the moment but I am working on it!!

Hi,

Training as a reflexologist was best thing i ever did.....but have to say that it is not without its troubles,as others have said finding clients is such hard work,my mind is contstantly working on new ways to advertise etc.

But like you i have a 2 yr old son & i am now earning money from home around my husbnads shifts so we dont have to pay for childcare.My first year i did everything possible to fit in with my clients which was very stressful,but this my 2nd year I just work when my husband is home to mind my son. The first year i averaged 2 clients a week this year its around 5,which to me is gr8.

But i have to say that the first year only just about covered cost of course but you have to take into accout other expenses as well,and this year I may just be about breaking even in what i have spent out....but when you think it is a skill you will have for a lifetime it is so worth it.

And i absolutely love my work,money is important of course but when you are doing something you love, especially that fits in with family life you just cant ask for more!

Would definately reccomend you train!!

hi

it does take a long time to build up your client base a regular one that is.
I work from home, i use my conservatory which can be quite hot during the day, but i have a ceiling fan with variable speed which helps alot and i open a couple of windows but only occasionally do i have clients during the day most come in the evening when its cool and as for using it in winter there is a lovely big radiator which throws out enough heat to warm the whole room.
think about when you want to work it might be worth while using your conservatory as a start.

Just starting out myself and decided to go the Mobile route, but I'm keeping an eye open for a suitable place to work from. My home is lovely but not suitable as it is too noisy with the family around me.

Give it a go in the Conservatory and/or mobile and see how you go.

I have a therapy room which was a conservatory. At first I found it unbearably hot in summer so I bought air conditioning. his hasn't really helped so my husband painted the roof with white masonry paint. It's now lovely and cool in summer and cost a fraction of the air con (wish we'd thought of it sooner!) For colder months I bought a reasonably priced convector heater and it's very effective.
