School Tuition

Hello!
I am looking at starting at a MT school in Missouri and their tuition is about $10,000 for an accelerated, 10-month, 600 course. Is that more than you paid, less than you paid, or is it about the same?

I went to massage school in NYS, I went to a full time program of 1000 hours, completed in 6 months. My tuition was $10,500, not including books, table, supplies, etc. HTH!

I have a friend who is looking into going to MT school in STL, MO.
The current figures she shared with me were from around $14,000 to $17,200.
So, it sounds like your school is a Lot Less than others in the state. You might want to ask for names of Grads from their schools and actually talk to someone who has been to the different MT programs in your area.
You can also ask on the board here to see if any of our members are familiar with the schools you are interested in attending.

I went to a school in OK and the price there for 10 months was just shy of $9000.00 which only included scrub uniforms, books and one set of sheets and other misc. supplies while in school. It was an 814 hour course which included lab time and externship.

The thing I found is that schools that are board licensed are more expensive than those that aren't. Depending on your state or city requirements, they may require that you graduate from a board licensed school. The other schools which I feel would give a better individualized education will sometimes include your table, sheets and oils when you start your class. I would have went that route except that they did not have financial aide available and you had to find a loan source on your own or do a payment plan. Both of which were not an option for me. Most of the students coming out of that school seemed to actually have way better techniques than those coming out of schools like the one I went to. My advaneforum.xxxe is that my instuctor had went to the school I had wished to attend so she would share what they taught her with us. They were also allowed to spend more time on different modalities such as Asian techiniques, cranial sacral, myofacial release etc. My school would only lightly touch on them because of restrictions (they claim) from the board that gave them their licensing.

Make SURE you shop around first. Most schools will let you sit in on a whole class or two and monitor the class to see if you feel it would work for you or not. Take advaneforum.xxxe of that!! More and more schools are also including the NCE test fees in their tuition. Something I think all schools should offer whether their state requires it yet or not. Not because I like the NCBTMB (money sucking, political BS @(%&*&$)!!! :mrgreen: ) Just might as well get on that band wagon now.

Humm...

The tuition includes the books and NCE, and there are extra charges for sheets, lotion, and a holster...The school has a long list of credentials, and seems to be board certified.

There aren't too many other schools in this area. Actually, there's two or three, but they are the technical colleges that also offer a long list of other types of degrees. This is the only one in my area that focuses on massage only. I wanted to be sure that it was a fair price--not marked up because they have little to no competition.

As for checking with graduates, I just so happen to have a gift certificate for a massage that I got for Christmas! I looked into it and she did graduate from the school that I am looking at. Coincidence, or not????

I took a condensed 600 hour course that lasts 6 months for MEDICAL massage for under $4500. They are out there...check ALL of your options because it may not be the mostly advertised school. Good luck!

School Tuition

I'm paying about $14,000 for a year-and-a-half 900 hour program. I'm in the Northeast, which is a more expensive place to run a business than Missouri, so I'm a little suspicious about the cost of your program versus the number of hours you're getting. But, it's a good field and you'll doubtless make back the money once you're out there working!

The 500-hour program at my school runs at a little under $5500, not including books.

In my school-researching, I did come across a 700+-hour-program at a local vocational school that came out to $10k, and the curriculum looked fabulous. Unfortunately, there was a very sell-sell vibe about them, so I ended up continuing my search elsewhere. Nice thing with some of these really costly programs is that sometimes you can actually get financial aid for them - unfortunately, though, I'm already attending a 4-year university & I filled out my FAFSA for that school's tuition, and it didn't help when the vocational school recruiter said Well next time you file, you can't file for both schools, you'll have to pick either us or them! By the way, the deadline is this Friday!..... no thanks. :shock:

When I graduated in 2004, the tuition was about $16000CAN for the two year, 2800 hour course including the books. Table was extra. Not a bad deal for all the education we received which included Exercise Rehab, some Personal training, and cadaver lab. Currently the school has begun offering a three-year degree program as well which includes topics such as Cranial Sacral, Myofascial Release, Mobilizational Therapy, Interferential and other modalities, and Sports Massage. All in all, a very in depth degree.

WOW!!!! 2800 hours?! What kinda timeframe did you finish the program in??

Cadaver lab for gross anatomy or massage practice? Man, that's pretty involved....

I dunno, are there even any schools down here that offer 2800 hours worth of courses?!

The course ran for two years full time or three years distance education.
For cadaver labs, we had I believe 10 in total, each about 3 hours or so. It was pretty intense with practical classes on tues and thurs and theory on mon wed fri. We also had one evening mandatory clinical work and one afternoon mandatory volunteer work in settings such as hospitals and care homes.

My school is 750 hours and tuition is around $8000. They estimate that with sheets, table, etc that it will be around $10,000, and that is for a six month program or a one year program.

It seems to me like they are mostly pretty even, when it comes down to it. Some are cheaper, but you have to buy books, and pay for the exam; others include books and the exam but are more expensive...Of course a few of you showed that there are exceptions.

I appreciate all of your thoughts! I'm pretty much realizing that the cost of school shouldn't be a major factor in determining which school to attend. Their credentials and the courses they offer are becoming more important to me. I suppose that's the most important thing...

I went to school in Texas and we paid $2250 for our 300-hr program (250 classroom hours and 50 internship hours; externship not available in our state as far as I know) and then went on to take an additional 250 hours of advanced classes at an additional cost of $3100, so about $5650 total (tuition only, not including any books or supplies) for 550 hours. I'm in my last week of school here in Michigan and the tuition for a 9 months course with 720 credit hours is $12,000. That includes a table, scrubs and books.

I attend a school in St. Louis and my tuition is $15,000. It includes table, books, abmp student insurance, fees, & national certification exam fee. It's a 9 mo program and I only have 4 weeks left.........yeah

almost forgot....includes uniform as well and it's a 600 hr course

I'm going to Mueller Massge School in San Diego for a 1000 hour program. When I first started it was 10K then 12K now its about 15K :shock: for either a year or two year course.

Overall I'd say I've been very happy with my education, both Asian and Western. Can only think of one class that was a real stinker.

Hi Hi-

I'm a MO College student and while MO College used to be an independent school, it was bought out by CEC - Career Ed. Corp.

My tuition was around $12k wihtout the dell laptop they tried to sell me for like $2k. (I'm a computer geek - I already have 3 working computers - one's a laptop & I knew that they were overcharging at that price.)

It's a 9 month program with all your books, 2 sets of scrubs and your table included in the tuition.

Yeah..... I have had no problems with the texts - I understand that part of the game, but the table????

Oh no! They sell you an Earthlite Avalon package that has the padded face cradle, skinny bolster and carrying case for $519.17 - exact same package from Massagewarehouse.com? $369. Now, you can't tell me, that being an international company, CEC doesn't have a corporate contract in place w/ like Massage Warehouse or even Earthlite direct to get the tables. So, why are they overcharging the students by $150 for this?

If I'd had the spare $$, I would have not bought my table via the school, since I've heard that a Massage Envy just east of school is selling all their tables for $100.

I'm very disilusioned w/ the school practices, but most of my teachers have been fairly decent.

Check out who owns your school - if it's run by like CEC, be wary. Seriously - pay attention to your options.

And, if the school says, "Oh, your table is included in your tuition..." Ask them how much. If they say, "I don't know." Tell them to find out, because you want to know before you sign the papers.

Also, another sign to look out for, "Oh, we base your tuition on your income."

That's not exactly true. They apply for financial aid for you if they are an accredited school, but they usually don't "adjust" the tuition if you are in a lower income bracket than the next person who walks in the door. My tuition was around $12k like I said, but the next group to start immediately behind me? They raised the tuition to close to $16k, from what I heard.

Do your research & look closely. I almost jumped into one school also owned by CEC and didn't like the "sell sell sell" attitude they really had. Come to find out - their MT program is all screwed up. It's like a $17k/16 mos program and the new dept chair was never to be found, wouldn't return calls and such - even the staff didn't know who she was, since she never held staff meetings!

Okay, I have housework I need to get done if I'm going to get on the road to Chicago tonight! 8)
