I am thinking of doing a course in sports massage, but before I do, I am intrigued into finding out more information on the subject, like what the course involves. Any infromation that you can give me, wil be extremely appreciated.

Selective revision of the muscular and skeletal system

The principles of training
Neuromuscular techniques
Soft tissue release techniques
Perform specific advanced massage techniques for sports injuries
Have a good understanding of the treatment and aftercare of sports injuries
Advise and assist with exercise and rehabilitation of clients
Have an in depth understanding of anatomy and sports injuries

Hi there,
I have been in the sports therapy industry for about 10 years now, and sports massage has grown quite rapidly. This has caused a huge growth in the number of training courses set up. One of the problems this has caused is that huge amounts of sports massage therapists are being produced each year, with skills that leave a lot to be desired. The knock-on effect of this has been that most qualifications that have any any association with the beauty therapy industry (such as those taught by the beauty/holistic therapy departments at local colleges) are being shunned by employers in the sports industry. This is a shame as there are just as many good courses, as there are bad ones.

One of the most recent developments is the application to make Sports Therapy a chartered and state recognised therapy, such as physiotherapy. The good thing about this is it will stop a whole lot of the poorly trained therapists from ruining the industry.

If you are seeking a sports massage course, try to go for one of the companies that are not associated with beauty or holistic therapies, and which offer their own qualifications, instead of some of the 'nationally recognised' ones. These may be recognised, but try getting a decent job in the industry with one!

I hope I havent put anyone off training in Sports Massage, because it is such a great industry to be in!!

I would reccommend the following training establishments:

Active Health Training, Bradford, West Yorkshire www.activehealthgroup.com

London School of Sports Massage www.lssm.com

Northern Institute of Massage, Bury, Lancs www.nim56.co.uk

These courses arent as cheap as college courses, but by far, offer the best training and best route into this industry.

Hi sprittualhappiness regarding Sports Massage you have seen some very good post this is a hands on therapy make no mistake coures at home teaches the correctley but where do you practice. The London school of Masage is Mel Cash a wizard in this therapy be very lucky but be careful

Hi, yes, that is very true, I have seen some courses advertising Distance Learning Sports Massage courses, which is ridiculous! You need hands on practice. All three courses mentioned above, offer home study, for part of the theory, plus intensive home study.

Hi,

I'm looking to do Sports Massage/Therapy too. One of the tutors I have at college had heard it was difficult to get insurance for this as Physiotherapists feel it is "muscling in" on their patch. Has anyone else heard of this??

Personally, I still think it's a good thing to learn for extra background knowledge and extra techniques...

I did my ITEC Sports Massage Diploma and ITEC Sports Therapy Equipment Diploma quite a few years ago and am an ITEC Sports Massage College Tutor.
Most of my students apply for insurance through IPTI, ITEC or BCMA.
Distance learning is a different kettle of fish. Insurance and/or employment would be difficult here, as you do not get the hands on that is required.

IPTI is a good one for insurance, as they offer comprehensive cover at fairly reasonable fees.

Another piece of advice I would give, is this, you should decide if you want to do sports massage or sports therapy. If you do sports massage on its own you should go with a company such as the London School, as you will need an SMA (sports massage association) accredited course. Unfortunately neither VTCT or ITEC offer SMA accredited courses, and therefore, graduates from these backgrounds will find it increasingly difficult to find decent employment.

If you chose to do sports therapy, then look for one of the previous ones I mentioned, as within the next few years, sports therapists will become chartered and state registered, as physiotherapists are now. This will open up the industry no end, and in my opinion, will make quite a lot of sports massage therapists redundant.

Just a 'minor' point
The licensing 'pie' is being sliced as we speak and SMA is seeking SPORTS MASSAGE NOS recognition (not remedial and not sports therapy which will be licensed seperately)
People will need to decide what thy want to do 'cos the Scope of Practice is different for each.
