A 30-year-old man in Ballari, Karnataka, faced a life-threatening situation following a complimentary head massage at a local salon, which resulted in a stroke. The victim, a housekeeping worker, experienced intense pain during the aggressive neck manipulation but initially brushed it off. However, his condition deteriorated hours later, leading to difficulties in speaking and weakness on his left side.
Upon visiting the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with a stroke caused by a tear in the carotid artery, which occurred due to the forceful twisting of his neck. He was treated with anticoagulants to mitigate further complications and spent nearly two months in intensive care before finally returning home. This type of stroke, known as a dissection-related stroke, occurs when the wall of a blood vessel is damaged, leading to a reduced blood flow to the brain.
Experts warn that sudden and forceful neck movements can result in severe health issues, including strokes and even fatalities. This incident is part of a concerning trend, often termed “salon stroke” or “beauty parlor stroke,” where similar cases have been reported, such as a 50-year-old woman in Hyderabad who suffered dizziness and nausea during a hair wash in November 2022, later diagnosed as a stroke.
