Training whilst pregnant?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, although I've been reading it for a while I only registered today!

I have a quick question, I wonder if anyone will be able to answer it for me.

Briefly, I've had 4 miscarriages in the last 14 months and after the last one, decided to stop letting pregnancy and miscarriage control my life and to do something different that would help take my mind of things. I've always been interested in complementary therapies and thought that I'd like to do a practitioners course in reflexology. I've got all the details through and I'm ready to sign up - but then today I found out I am pregnant again (we're not completely sure how this happened as we were on a break, but there you go!). I really don't want to miss this opportunity. I feel that if I don't do this course now, I'll never do it. Also, if I decide not to do it, or aren't allowed to do as I'm pregnant, what if I miscarry again, then I'll have to wait a whole year before being allowed to do the course again - possibly being in the same predicament!

I will of course ask before I sign up, but for my piece of mind today, does anyone know of any reason why I wouldn't be allowed to partake? If I don't miscarry, I'll be about 12/13 weeks by the time my course starts.

Hi Laura,
I am on a reflexology course at the moment and one of my class members is pregnant. She got pregnant at the very begining of our course and had to stop receiving treatment until past 14 weeks. but has attended all the lessons. Seek advice form your course tutor they will know the best action to take.

Congratulations on your good news!

Here are my thoughts. If you train now, are you going to have the time to devote to your studies and what will happen when your baby is born and you have qualified? Will you have the time and energy to put into building up your practice and getting some good hands-one experience? Will you be able to get child care while you are working? etc. I trained with a couple of ladies who had babies after qualifying, and neither of them is doing an awful lot of reflexology to my knowledge almost 3 years down the line. These courses aren't cheap and I wonder if you might be better off doing one in a couple of years maybe. These are just my thoughts as they occur to me, I'm not trying to tell you what to do of course. I hope this is helpful, and good luck to you.

I started my Reflexology course last November and my baby was born at end of December. I am glad i started it as if i had left it until after baby was born i dont think i ever would of started it. I have found it very hard going, I have struggled to find time to study and my case studies are constantly letting me down and i have to fit in with teh ones i do have, which having a 7mth old baby is hard to do most of the time. But i am getting there and i plan to keep going and am determined to complete and pass the course. But.....if you are only just pregant and your course is about to start i would say go for it, when i look back to the time i had on my hands when i was pregnant compared to now, it will be much easier to get started straight away.

Sorry to hear of your miscarriages, like you I ahve had problems conceiving, my baby came along following IVf treatment... which is why i want to be a reflexologist. so i can work from home and spend as much time as poss with my long awaited baby. I am not planning to work full time, just if i could gradually build up a handful of clients i would be happy.

I hope all is going well for you now and that you have decided to do the course, it will be a struggle but well worth it in the end.

Thank you so much for your reply, you have made me determined to do this course. Like you, I think if I don't do it now, I never will. Unfortunately I have miscarried again, so I wont have to worry about training whilst pregnant just yet, but I feel happy enough after reading your post that I could do it if the situation arose again. Congratulations on having your baby! My friend is currently 15 weeks pregnant through ivf, so know what an emotional time that can be - well done you for cracking on and doing the course.

At One - thank you too for your thoughts on the matter, they are very valid ones. It certainly made me sit back and have a good think, realistically, about how things would be. I am SO determined to do something different with my life, and I think if I were to be in that situation, things would be fine. Thank you for being honest.

congratulations on your good news

I am a qualified reflexologist now, and like yourself just before taking my course 3 years ago i found out I was expecting a baby, it is true you will NOT be able to recieve reflexology until you pass 14 weeks as reflexology stimulates parts of your body it can lead to miscarriage.
while i was on the course due to not being able to recieve treatment i felt a bit left out and had to pair up with others it just did,nt feel the same so I decided to leave the course, and i did it the year later, my daughter was born in the april and i attend college in the september, i,m sure you will be able to manage, as its one of the easiest of the holistics to learn ( well i thought it was lol)
what you have to consider is do you want the same senaro, or are you prepared to wait a year, you have to go with what you feel is best,
but i would consider doing reflexology its a really good and i,m sure you will enjoy it too.

i think it is an excellent idea that you want to continue with your refelxologist studies! i agree with jess that it will be hard work but the rewards is so amazing and you and your unborn baby will benefit as the course is a self discovery journey - or at least that is what is was for me!

i'll be qualifying middle september and what a journey it has been! i also plan to specialise in moms-to-be as it is such a special event in life!

Thank you for your messages, it's comforting to know there are others out there who have been through a similar experience and still managed to complete the course. Although this is no longer a problem for me, shoudl something happen whilst I'm still training, then I feel I will be able to continue.

My course starts the first weekend in November, I can't wait!

Hi Laura.

I am so sorry for your miscarriages and congratulations on this pregnancy You and this little soul will benefit so much from this wonderful course!It has been a true blessing in my life to do this course.

I would love to share with you that i fell pregnant very soon after I began my diploma in reflexology last Septemberand I am due in 2 weeks now!(I also have a 2 year old daughter)There are no reasons why you can not continue with your training, though I wouldnt let any ofyour fellow students practice reflexology on your feet. Our teacher wouldnt let any of the students practice on me until I was about 4 mths pregnant..maybe later. My advice would be to get stuck into your case studies. For our diploma we had to do 6 clients, 10 times each and write up a case study on each..Try and space them out so you dont tire yourself out and try and write up one as you work on it(I did the opposite and spent all summer writing up all 6-heavily pregnant and tired). I have my exam (A&P) next friday and all being well will qualify mid september- they have kindly brought the date forward for me as the original exam was to be on my due date lol .

Remember to take care of yourself, get a comfortable seat for yourself so you do not strain your back when you are doing treatments and rest before you commence a treatment, also be careful to avoid certain essential oils if you choose to use oils on your clients feet(burning and touching them).

I do hope things are still going well for you. I wanted to let you know that I started a reflexology course back in the beginning of the year after losing 2 babies, and found out 2 weeks into the course that I was pregnant again. My course tutor was really supportive, and we agreed that I would continue to have adapted treatments during the training (even though this is NOT what the books/ exam papers/ etc advise, and not what I'd do if I had a client come to me now!).

I honestly believe that the reflex treatments helped me enormously to cope with the stress and anxiety of the early weeks (both miscarriages previously happened at 10 weeks), and it was good to know that I was doing something positive which would carry on even if I lost the baby again. The other people on the course were very supportive too, which helped me not to feel too isolated.

When it comes to actually having a baby and having to make decisions about work etc, in my experience you can't tell what you're going to want to do, or need to do, when that all happens! My gut feeling was if I've got the qualification then I've got more choices than if I've put off doing it. And pregnancy and having a new baby/toddler is a good time to meet lots of other stressed out mums who all need a bit of pampering...! (Is that terribly mercinary, or just good business sense?!)
