hi,
at the mo i am doing a reflexology course, its a basic course then you need to do an advance course after, what i wanted to know is does anyone use eg reflex balls or crystal wands e.t.c or do you only give a treatment using just the hands, i didn't know if people are labling their products as tools to use in reflexology so people of the public would buy from them thinking its what professionals use.[&:]

In reply to your message, I do use tools but not crystal wands etc. I did my VTCT Trg in the UK and went to Singapore to do the basic course in Rwo Shur Reflexology with Geraldine Tan. She uses a wooden tool, and the reason for using this is to 'save the fingers and thumbs'. In the Rwo Shur clinic in Singapore, the ladies can have up to 20 clients a day, and they have been practising Rwo Shur for the last 20 years. You can go as deep or as light as you can. So for treatments, if I need to get around the heel area and its always difficult to thumb around this part, I use the wooded stick.

as a matter of interest, if you use a stick or a wand to do treatments, how do you know if crystal deposits are present? and how can you judge how deep/ light you are going?

i know thai foot uses a stick, so i imagine the singapore therapy would... and i have heard comments about these therapies hurting. are they supposed to? i realise that reflexology can find sensitive areas that are tender, but how does the stick thing work within a clients limits?

I'm dredging this up from the depths of my memory here, and it is purely an observation, but if a reflexologist wants to use implements don't they have to check to make sure it's OK with their professional body/insurer?

I have sent my Rwo Shur Cert to my insurers last year and they havent been rejected and Im off to do my Advaced Rwo Shur in April in Singapore. However I have also done a course in Thai Foot/Hand Massage and this uses a wooden tool. I have had treatments out in the Far East and it is very painful, but the pain is short and sharp and goes away quickly. The effect is instant. I put my back out and she corrected the problem with a few strokes of the tool. As far as I am concerned I do use fingers/thumbs, knuckles and reach for the wooden tool only in areas that are very hard skinned like heel areas. I believe in the Rwo Shur method because of its effectiveness and as far as foot maps are concerned I use the Beijing School of Reflexology Foot Map which is identical to a Thai Foot Reflex Map which is identical to the Rwo Shur Foot Map.

Please entlighten me as to crystal wands?

Crystal wands are similar to what you are talking about but made from crystals (various types). They are shaped, wider at one end than the other and used in the same way.

Is it possible to get a copy of your foot chart? I saw a really interesting one the other day from 1980 that a nurse had done and it was very in depth. I would love a copy of it if possible.

As for the pain bit, I think there is a lot in it. My friend had reflexology at Singapore Airport, it hurt like hell but it was very effective. I don't go for the softly softly approach myself but then don't set out to hurt either.

I have used the wands but didn't stick with it, but can see they and other tools have a place. I usually use my knuckles on the heel area. I would imagine you would do your feeling with your thumbs first and then use them if necessary?

I have used crystal wands before in reflexology but only really because I am doing a crystal course at the moment and wanted to try to incorporate the crystals into other treatments. The main reason i used them was to stimulate an area rather than using it as a diagnostic tool (if that makes sense[&:]) - A crystal wand could be used if energy work is also being done as they can concentrate and focus the energy into one specific point and different crystals can aid different ailments.

Yes the Eastern Method of Reflexology is painful, but I dont go in too deeply, just enough to feel crystal deposits with thumbs, however if areas are really hard to get into without breaking one's thumb and use the wooden tool. In reply to Rosie, I did a course at Sue Ricks and she uses Soft Touch. Asked if if the touch is so gentle, how did she feel for crystal deposits. Answer to that is she doesnt feel for crystal desposits because she believes by balancing and using the soft approach, if there are deposits, by frequent Reflex. sessions, they wil disperse anyway.

Candie, will scan a copy of Rwo Shur foot map and email or fax it to you at your clinic. Unfortunately, Beijing School of Reflex Map is too big, poster size. Have got a copy of Thai Foot Map, so will scan and send/fax.

Hi Panicky, I would love to see the foot map too if you are able to email it? We only touched on Rwo Shur during my training. Do you consider Rwo Shur to be a completely different discipline from reflexology, or as a sort of 'branch' of it?

As soon as I get round to scanning the foot maps will email you with it. As I also work full-timea as a PA, and do treatments in the evening and at wkends, I am a bit busy, but will certainly email you with the 'Eastern' footmaps. I only read about Rwo Shur on Google and was totlaly fascinated by it. As I visit Singapore quite regularly, I decided to do the Basic Rwo Shur and the whole concept of treating is different to here. We have a more gentle and kinder approach to treating and the concern is that the client feels good after a treatment. In the Far East, the 'feel good' relaxed feeling is left out of the treatment so if you go for a Reflex. treatment, its to 'cure' the problem. A Reflex treatment costs around £7-£8. There is no regulation bodies out there and everything is passed down - like other eastern therapies, ie acupuncture/chinese herbal medicine etc. The treatment of reflex is painful. Lots of knuckling (mainly to preserve the fingers because they believe that you use up Chi energy if you use fingers and therefore you will not be able to carry on treating lots of clients). There is alos a Rwo Shur Massage Board where you do a keep fit routine daily. This is as good as having a Reflex treatment yourself. It is basically a board with lots of pointy bits and you stand on this board to music, and it 'wakes'up the reflex points. When I go back in April to do my Advanced Rwo Shur, I will purchase these boards. It is fascinating how Eastern Reflx differs in approach and footmaps but I respect it and so far use these footmaps for all my treatments but I respect the client and adapt pressure to suit.
