What can you say to convince a mate??

Help needed fellas. Since I first went to LOS (Phuket) last January and fell in love with just about everything in the place, I've been singing it's praises to my flatmate trying to get him to come back over with me some seforum.xxxe.

He's a bloke that likes a drink, fancies Asian chicks, is motorbike mad (he has two of them), and he's not short of $$$. Yet despite everything I tell him he won't go over for a look see.

What can you say to convince a bloke? I've known him for ages and I know if he went over he'd be hooked and he'd be the one begging me to go back again.

I know you can't make someone do something they don't want to but I musn't be selling the place well enough. So how about putting in a communal effort and suggest to him some of the reasons he should at least have a look. My last resort is to offer to refund all his expenses if he doesn't have a great time. I know he really wants this.

Some pics of your trip of you having fun is usually all it takes. I have a lot of friends back in the UK I know would love it if they came here but they won't because they are stuck in a mindset where it is 'other' people that do exciting things.

All this is compromised if you take a "buddy"! And sometimes when you get home, he will maybe not add reputation-points!!!! :light:

But geez..... you know how it is sometimes. You discover something good, like a new beer, music, movie, whatever.... that you know your mates would be right into and despite your best efforts, they won't take your well intentioned advice.

I've known this bloke for years now and i know this is what he needs.

I agree with you too tintin, i usually come over with a mate from Adelaide. We stay in different rooms, do different stuff, basically just do whatever we each want to do. But we still get pissed, nail chicks and try to kill each other on go-karts together plenty of times. But we ain't joined at the hip or anything stupid.

Going to thailand with mates is great. I have been on multiple trips and about half those trips with mates. But i have equally enjoyed trips alone, in some ways going alone has been better, being able to do what i want, no one to disagree with my plans or activities, and i have talked to and made great friends i wouldnt have otherwise if i'd been drinking with a mate. But the times i have shared a beer with a good mate from home and witnessed the incredible sights of thailand.... they have been the best.

Has your friend travelled much or is a traveller at heart? I think there are those that love travel (will jump on a plane anywhere at the drop of the hat) and there are those that just DONT GET IT. You know the people im talking about from your home town... Never left their town or their state or maybe their own country. They look at you as if you are mad for wanting to spend all your time somwhere else.

My advice would be try the hard sell once or twice and if he doesnt jump at the chance to visit a wonderful place like Thailand, he probably isnt worth taking or wouldnt enjoy it.

Yes it is the same here in the US. When I tell coworkers about my trips to LOS their first questions are usually about the sex industry. This is despite the fact that I now have pictures from nearly all over the country decorating my office (beaches, mountains, ruins, images of buddha and the like).

I have also tried to convince my roommate to travel over there. I'm know he would have a great time, but also I'm sure he is a bit worried what his family would think.

Put him onto this forum and like said the pics, if he still doesn't want to come tell him another bike rider from Oz said he is a faggot and has dead insects on the back of his bike jacket ( rides so slow that the insects run into his back) if that doesn't work guess that you are wasting your time. Take some pictures next time your there with your new friends and let him drool. They do have bikes for hire in Thai also so he can have all that he likes there.

Got a mate similar in UK, a real mans man, loves the girls, drinking etc recently divorced but said he couldn't go to Thailand because what others might think of him. So I asked what do others think of me, he just said "you're dodger".

I would say each to their own and you only get that reaction cos theyv'e never been, good leave them at home its more fun on your own and leaves more fun for the rest of us.

this is a subject that pertains to me very much. ive been telling my friends to come over. and they all make excuses. my one friend started to make plans and one time i was on the phone with him and he started to hem a little bit and telling me his friend said that its better to go such and such a time. i said, "ok, talk to you later". im not begging anyone to come to paradise. although id love to have my boys from home to come. oh well

Came over with one of my best friends a couple of years ago and ...... never again.
Apart from the previously mentioned freedom of movement if you're on your own, he didn't like the food (loves Thai food at home!)
What really got to me was after a few days he declared that "he didn't find Thai girls that attractive" - after this we pretty much did our own thing.
He's still a good friend but we've agreed to disagree on Thailand. Also he is the only person at home who I can talk to about LOS.
