Have given this plenty of thought (what I would do if caught in a raid). First of all I always leave my wallet and cellphone in my car. What I carry is a business of card of a US citizen and if asked to identify myself I would say that I am from out of town (New York) and provide a fake name (name on business card). If pressed for identification I would claim to only have the business card and I would show it.

My thinking is they have no way to verify my identity and in all likelihood they would let me go with a warning.

Any comments?

What happens if you are not a good enough of a lair and the Police decide your ID is fake? They may have let you go with just a warning, but now you have fake id and they won't release you now, so you go to your car and get your real id. The Police would be pissed-off at you now. Sounds like a pretty risky game to play.

This would only work on the dumbest cops out there (and admittedly, there are a few). Not being able to provide proper identification will guarantee one thing - further investigation on their part while you cool your heels in custody. Eventually you get found out and get caught in the lie, which, by the way, is a criminal offence which they will tack on to whatever bawdy-house-type charges they might have been thinking about dropping on you. And any slim hope of them cutting you some slack will be long gone.

You can leave your wallet and your cellphone in the car, but it would be a little difficult to leave your keys in it. If you brought your keys in to the MP and if you have one of those keyless entry things on it, all they have to do is go out into the lot and press the button a few times until they find your car (and most MP's have small parking lots so it would not be difficult). The way around this though would be to park a few blocks away. However, even if you parked a few blocks away, if you had your car keys on you as a "tourist" who "took a cab" and did not take a wallet into the MP, I'd be suspicious about why you brought car keys.

Also, with your fake business card, all they'd have to do is ask what hotel you are registered at, and call it. They'd quickly find that there's no one there by that name. However, they could just as easily ask to see your hotel key as well, which if you really want to play this game, I suggest you bring a fake hotel key with you.

Bottom line is that as clever as this is, it is not fool-proof.

All Criminal offences in Canada are a "Federal" offence, hence the Canadaian Criminal Code. You may be watching too much U.S. television, if you are throwing out terms like "Federal Offence". Remember, in the U.S, states control the Criminal law, in Canada it is a Federal responsibility.

There are "Provincial Offences", but penalties are minor and involve fines, not imprisonment.

For those who might not know it's called impersonation and it is a serious criminal offence. They're going to do more than write you a $110.00 fine and send you on your way!

If you are found in a MP and give a false name to the police and for whatever reason they don't believe you, they can hold you in custody until you prove who you are. That's obstructing a police officer. I suppose you could have your wife come down to the station and identify you.

1. Where are you staying?
2. At a friend you say...Name and Phone # so I can call to verify
3. At a Hotel you say....Name and Rm #. so I can call to verify
4. You just drove in and will be leaving back to US. Where is the car? So I can run a check on the plate #.

Not worth it to play games with the cops.

If you are so afraid to get busted then don't do it.

Good idea: once they bust the parlour, they are there to make things happen, not to leave looking like fools, so don't expect they will not give you a hard time....telling the truth might not even work!...tell them what they want to hear!...you got a massage, and she solicited you for a "hand job".

isn't this whole conversation based on the assumption that if you are a visiting 'American', you are OK.

Is that right? Can they not get in trouble as well??? Even if there is reciprocity, there are no areas in US where stroking is legal.

It is true, the whole premise is based on the fact that his guise is American, but I don't think he's counting on the "I didn't know" factor. What he's probably counting on is that the cops don't want to have to take the extra effort involved in "tracking down" an "out-of-town" individual with no ID, or that they don't want to take the effort to process someone who doesn't live in the jurisdiction. My understanding is that cops do an awful lot of paperwork after filing criminal charges, and they may not just want to go through the effort if someone doesn't live here.

However, chances are they would pursue this for two reasons. First, as pointed-out in other posts, there are a number of things in the cover that make it look very suspicious (e.g. asking the hotel he's staying at and calling it). Second, it is my understanding from reading the board, if the cops are intent on pressing Criminal Charges (as opposed to by-law inforcement, which ususally does not involve cops), they have received complaints about the MP, and they need to demonstrate results to the complainant - so it is unlikely that they would let-off a "foreign" found-in. I guess if they are laying criminal charges, they are playing hardball and won't let anyone off so easily.

Do the B chains get busted very often? I've been to several MP's where there is only one girl working and most of them locked the front door. What are the chances of LE breaking down the door? With all the noise, you'd probably have enough time to put your clothes back on. Seams to me that they are interested in busting places that have many people in it at once?
