What is must see in Phuket?

Hi there all. This is my first post and I like the site.

I am heading to Phuket for the very first time in September and would like some information. What is unmissable in the area?
I have to add however that I have been to LOS a number of times but always go to Bangkok and Pattaya. This year I decided on a change (and also believe that the best way to help the tsunami victims is to come here) and I look for ideas.
All of you who have visited Pattaya will know why it is difficult to go elsewhere because of the raunch and action and I need music, drinks and women, at least each night. I am happy with snakes, elephants and temples during the day.

So then! Come on and tell me why YOU think that Phuket is Heaven on Earth!

You are really close to Krabbi there are some really spectacular beaches there. Also the James Bond Island is quite interesting.

some ideas for day time tours
1/ half day island tour - reckon it gives you a bit of an idea of the area nearly always do one first couple of days in every tour,get to see quite a lot
just by observing while travelling and tourist things also o/k. cost 400 500 baht (try and do same distance with tuk tuk or taxi for that price ,cant and dont get hassled as much with tour)sometimes you also see thing that seperate trip might be good for.
2/ phan nga tour (try sims afternoon tour about 800 baht good tour)
3/ Phi phi Island (1200 baht all day)
4/ ao nong princess day trip to Krabi(1350 baht great tour)
5/elphant treking is worthwhile also.
6/Fantasea at kamala (?) is a great show at night at a reasonable price.

I try to do tour every 3rd day as it breaks your holiday nicely.

I will leave night time to someone else except for
there are some board members who own bars these are always good ,Mai Thai,Love bar,The Darkside and a few others which I cant remember but somebody will.
you are always made welcome at these spots.

Coral Island / Raja Island boat and day trips..

Skiff Asia day sailing.. Or larger yachts from the marinas if you like sailing..

simply touring the island, stopping at the sights and haveing a bite to eat somewhere, simple cheap and fun...

I like sailing but handling of a larger yacht always requires a bit in the way of prep and crew (though training and livaboards here are so cheap compared to back home).. But Skiff Asia have the smaller cheaper and fun end of the market..

They run training courses, they have a bit of a competative league going and take part in the local rallies and regattas (so its a good way to get into the scene) etc..

I tried to get a BM tour and organise a single day event with them but didnt seem to get much interest...

next time im over will let you know love sailing,had plenty of expiernce on skiffs and larger yachts (yes bareboat charters are dicy if crew not experienced)
but should be able to work something out.

If you are just into mongering then Pats and Bkk will win for sheer numbers of girls etc.

But if you want to throw in some nice beaches beautiful islands a round of golf and some great company Phuket is definately the spot.

Best daytour for me was sea canoe. You see Pang Nga bay and the quiet hongs inside some islands. If you have done that you don't need to go to James Bond Island.

Interested in some sailing. Bit rusty but did some Laser and 420, even regatta. Hobbycat not so good but 2 trips on 35-38 feet yachts to Corsica and Turkey.
Deckhand on bigger ones like "Eendracht" and "Mercator" 76 meter barquentine (long time ago when I was a cadet in the nautical college). So LivinLOS, count me in for 1 day event.

I was interested in the sea canoe trip with my girlfriend...however she is not a very good swimmer at all. Do they provide life jackets and would you say it was safe enough for a non swimmer??

I think the sea canoe tour of the caves along with James Bond island and the sea gypsey village on the water was a great day trip. I would recomend that as one of the best things you could do when you get here. It's safe for a non swimmer as well. Phangna Bay is quite beautiful.

Dive trip for a day is a possibility as the ocean is very nice here compared to Pattaya.

I am a good swimmer but still had to wear a life jacket. If you are not afraid being in a canoe close to the water then there is no problem, swimmer or no swimmer. Besides, you don't paddle, you got a Thai guy doing that job.

Hiya Teelack,
If your into biking. Hire a bike and take a ride along the coast north of Patong. Lots of hills and a variety of sharp & sweeping bends, with some fabulous views.
Got to be one of the best rides you'll find anywhere. (Except for the rides you'll pick up on Bangla of course.)

Phi-Phi tour..try to stay a night and get a boat to go around on your pace
Raya Islands trip
Laem Singh - i am not sure if it's ok after tsunami..think so..
have a drink@Tiger and then Safari till early morning.
