Why are some places open until 9pm and others until 1am?

The 9:00 for Body Rubs was contested 3 or 4 years ago - whether it is still an injunction to keep open late or offically changed I'm not sure.

The 1am close is from 2000, which is consistent with the bylaws HGH referenced.

The hours for gorgeous were amended in 2005 or 2006. It was challenged by alpha care. But, the last time I read checked the bylaws (as of August 2010) the amendments stood. Here is a link to a recent version of licensing bylaws. http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/municode/1184_545.pdf

No owner or operator shall, in respect of a body-rub parlour owned or operated by
him or her, open such body-rub parlour for business or permit the same to be or to
remain open for business or permit any body-rub or services of any kind to be
performed, offered or solicited in the said body-rub parlour except between the
hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Monday to Saturday, inclusive, and between
the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. [Amended 2005-
12-07 by By-law No. 1055-2005]

Yes, but this was challenged in the courts soon after the change. All I know is certain spas closed at 9:00 when the rules changed to 9:00, but throughout the legal challenges put the hours back to 1:00. I know this lasted for a while, and they may still be at a standstill (not sure if injunction or mere legal advice to use prior hours through precedings).

The by law may or may not be enforceable right now.

There is a group of spas that challenged the rules together, its not just AC. AC wouldn't follow the 1:00 rule anyway!!!

I'm not sure what happened to the legal challenge, but the amendment still stands in TO bylaws.

As I understand it, bodyrubs just take the ticket if/when its issued as a cost of doing business.

LOL. Back in the day, AC was a "24 hour" spa. Practically, it would close around 4am or 5am, but it would open at 8am again. Very handy for those 9am meetings up in North York.

Another thing to consider is whether it otherwise makes sense/is desirable for the place to be open late. A discreet entrance is a selling point to a client looking for discretion.. not so much so for a girl trying to get home at 1am!

Some just ignore the law. Others will turn off the sign at 9:00, but still answer the door until much later.

Wondered about this. I knew about Holistic but was also confused by body rub as some of them close at 10 pm and said that this is the legal time they have to close while others are open until 1 am. Seems that all of e body rubs in North York are open late.
