I have been catching up with all the replies/new topics today and thought I'd start a new topic, or rather bring them all together. You lot are making me feel very inadequate! Your training courses must have been so much better than mine. I did a VCTC diploma last year and wasn't taught half of what I've learnt since finding this site.

In answer to all those of you who replied to my post about pregnancy (turning clients away sob sob). This is what I was taught on my course - you can't treat anyone under 12 weeks. You are all right of course - on the one side it's a fear of litigation and also the fear of blaming yourself if something were to go wrong! I think the therapist's intuition is also valid but you have to have the courage to go against your teaching. I also had a client who was undergoing IVF and was told point blank by her clinic NOT to have reflexology - I did the research and am convinced that it would be safe as well as immensly helpful, obviously, treatment would need to be modified. I also agree with everyone about how unnatural it sounds and how to work on balance in a system which has been purposefully unbalanced! Hmm!!! I would love to do additional training. Anyone know of any courses in the North East of England.

I am also desparate to find a course on precision reflexology having bought the books (as did everyone by the sound of it!) Give that girl commission! I have been trying it out and am finding it really powerful (so are my clients!) but I'm anxious to know more. Looking forward to starting on the vertical reflexology book! So much to do, so little time.

Firstly, Ambermoon. Please don't feel inadequate. I too did a VTCT Diploma and now feel that it wasn't the most brilliant of courses. I've done most of my learning since finishing the course and have also found HP a wealth of information. So you're doing all the right things to improve your knowledge which is as it should be.

With many holistic therapies, there are as many opinions on who and how to treat as there are therapists (well almost) and quite simply no one really knows as no research has been done on a large scale (too costly), so by all means question and research, but don't feel pressured just because someone else does things differently to you.

hi ambermoon,

now who is it that says, for today do not worry... <g> ah yes paul! and its true. you are a fine therapist and your thirst for more knowledge shows your interest.

i liken any of these courses to passing a driving test... after you pass, you then learn to drive!

they teach the theoretics on courses but they cannot teach experience and with experience you gain more insight and knowledge. certainly these pages hold many experienced therapists so always share and ask... somebody has probably come across it before!

I agree with Rosie. And don't worry about your training, your thirst for knowledge will get you through and make you a good therapist. Good luck. I also had a client who was having IVF. She came for about six treatments and it helped her cope and good news, she is NOW PREGNANT!!! Yee haw! Not that I can't take the credit, that was a bit more precise. But there you go....

I would have loved to treat my IVF client. Her clinic refused to give her the OK and, in fact, advised her not to. This was probably because I sent a letter (as taught in college). After contacting the FHT, I now know that his is no longer necessary and the client's account of what the doctor said will be adequate. I am convinced that if I hadn't asked for their approval in writing, they would have had no problem. The client was upset too as she had read so much about the benefits of reflexology. I have been qualified for a year by the way, in answer to the question and you're right, experience is by far the best teacher.

Thanks for all your replies. Would love to keep in touch Lorraine! Sounds like we are not far away from each other. Have checked to links you suggested but no luck on the precision reflexology (which is becoming more fascinating each time I use it.)

Thanks to Siobhan (sorry, I don't know if I have spelled your name correctly). I have been trying all day to contact the number on the link you provided and note that there is a lot of interest so I may not be able to get on the course but I have now e-mailed and am keeping my fingers crossed.

I would be grateful if you find anything else if you would let me know!
