Ah, I see the wisdom of what you're saying. Obviously I was incorrect. All these people selling things are only there for our benefit, trying to help the poor foreigners in their need for flowers, cigarettes, chewing gum, and an escort service to a location for shows and drinks. We should be more appreciative of their efforts to help us, and the sacrifices they are making such as staying awake in the wee hours of the morning to help make our trip a bit more enjoyable.



Or, in plain English, if you agree with small kids selling *anything* on the streets at 3am, be it flowers or chewing gum, support them and their family by buying. If you think they're being exploited, be nice to them, but don't contribute to the problem, as you're only help making it worse.

And only for 'landofsmiles', someone selling flowers at 3am to a tourist is not a scam, but dragging a small kid out there at that hour to be doing the selling is far worse (IHMO) than what you think of as a "scam".

......and for Dawsey, since you think I'm avoiding answering things, please repeat your questions, as a simple question with a "?" at the end of each one, and I'll try to answer each one. I assume that you're actually asking a question, and not just trying to get me to say one more thing to get my "buddies" here to start yet another pissing contest that you'll then have to clean up afterwards. If you don't want that to happen, maybe you should use a private message.

Workable solution in this country? - none at present, and with this sentiment from farangs no incentive to modify behaviour either.

Take the kid(s) away from the parent/minder(?) and put them into temple school - or something similar where the kid at least gets some education and not a destiny of pan-handeling and exposure to a less than ideal side of life at such a critical impressionable seforum.xxxe of child development. Admitedly sadly, there is no ideal solution for parental explotation.

In Bkk, on Sukumwhit between soi 8 and 12 there are a bunch (5-10) doing the exact same thing. They crowd you and then they go throu your pockets. They ues the flowers as a reason to approach you. They are not aggressive in any way so just put your hands in your pockets and they will see that you know what they are trying to do and then they´l leave.

Yep, I get them now and again our kid, I just have my way of looking at things (Not always right I know) but FFS! Kids selling flowers are a nuisance! What happens when something really fcuks up!

I reckon bar owners should move them on with a rhino hide whip across thier backs, that'll learn 'em and make thier life that much better! They'll probably not come back after that! Sorted.

As for the blind bloke, I reckon you should put things in front of him as he shuffles around so he trips over for a laugh like!

I'll have to agree with the Woodsman on this one, but in saying that i usually pick say one chewin gum seller, one flower seller and stick to those, plus once they get to know you they dont min if you turn them down, but i usually say if not tonight i'll buy some in two days, they smile and always come back..doosn't see to be happening i Patts a lot these days though..

I really can't see the sense in giving any of these kids any money, as it's not going to them - it's going to their parents, or their handler. Giving money means they have all that much more incentive to continue, and even more kids will soon be out trying to get your $$$$.

On the other hand, I certainly can't see being mean to them, or acting as if they were vermin - it's almost certainly NOT their idea to be out on the streets at 2am trying to sell flowers or whatever. Unless/until they get so used to it that it just becomes part of their life, they'd probably rather be home asleep.

So, what to do. How to do something nice for them, without encouraging the activity? The only answer I can think of, is to do something that's nice for them, but in no way benefits the people waiting to collect the kid's earnings. If you buy them some food, or a coke, something that they have to enjoy right then, you'll make them just as happy, and they'll hopefully be finishing the night with a full stomach and an empty pocket. If enough people did this, the practice of sending the kids out on the streets to get money would start to go away.





I like MrDK's ideas, but unless he finds a way to get the authorities involved (as apparently they once used to be?) I don't think it's enough.

I know it's impractical, but if the kid knows English, it would be nice to ask if they go to school. If they say "no", then the reply is "no school, no money. Show me that you're going to school, and I'll help out".

In the meantime, don't give money - buy them a coke, or a burger, or a shirt, something that benefits THEM directly, but not the adults exploiting them, even if it's the parents.

Also for those that refuse to give money as it may benefits others, we pay taxes that fund wars etc and we can't control what the government does with tax payer funds, so do we stop paying taxes?

This is what happens in Thailand and has been happening since Adam was a boy, get used to it.

Eh?????? YOU'RE the one saying these kids and their parents are scamming tourists not me. I don't like to see the kids out but some of these people have to do whatever it takes to get from one day to the next. I bet you don't even know where some of these kids come from and the conditions they are living in. There is a road at the south end of Patong that runs off the "new road" past the rubbish tip and just before where the Galaxy Pub is up to Nanai Road. Take a stroll along it sometime and see the filthy shacks alongside it that some of these kids are living in. Some of them previously lived in shacks right opposite the rubbish tip but got moved on as the development along the new road has taken place.

So your solution to getting the kids off the streets is not to buy the flowers but buy them a greasy hamburger?

The last time I checked, I didn't really have a choice about paying taxes. It's that, or go to jail. However, that didn't stop people in the USA (myself included) from strongly protesting when things were wrong, which DID result in a change. The "people" made it clear we shouldn't have been fighting in Vietnam, and while it took a while, they eventually came to the same conclusion about Iraq.

Has this really been happening in Thailand "since Adam was a boy", or has it only been since the rich foreigners started showing up with $$$$$. I don't think you'd find too many kids trying to sell that stuff to the local people. The Thai people didn't create the problem - the foreigners did.

To be really crude, what you're saying is sort of like simply accepting roaches in your living quarters, and deliberately leaving out food for them hoping they'll eat and leave. Maybe so, but they'll be back with zillions more!



(Is it all wasted effort, and should we just "accept" it? Maybe, but from what's been posted up above when the authorities almost fixed the problem, along with MrDK's suggestions about how to really help these people, there are better options IMHO.)

They are pestering you almost nonstop in Chiang Mai I've noticed...far more than in Patong...a lot more kids being used. One last night looked about 7 or 8 but was already an expert at Connect4 and beat me easily.

Young kids shouldn't be allowed in bars anywhere IMO. They should be doing kids stuff, not going around trying to beg and hustle off punters. Cambodia was really bad for this, far worse than Thailand... Just my opinion...
