hindsight is 20/20 of course but.........

1. never pay in advance, because as the saying goes `you pay them to leave`, so, if you`ve already paid, some might take their chance and hop it!

2. it may kill the illusion of `romance` but a price agreed first leads to no fall outs later

3. if you spend some time in a bar, and get to know the girls a bit i think you have less chance of having the dirty done on you for various reasons (you may come back and complain, you get to know the girls characters a bit, they see you as a human, etc etc).

Sure, but will the police or whom ever really care? Nope. It is a headache for them, you are interupting thier TV boxing match, and they just want it to go away. You can afford more than her. So you pay. Maybe they can get a freebe out of it later from her.

You crossed a line when you got violent with the girl. Flipping a girl around and wrestling her to the ground isn't ok. Cowboy stuff just makes it a bigger problem.

Sticking to your guns for justice over a pay-for-sex deal gone wrong is not a good way to go down. $45 vs. life time access to LOS. Tough one to pick.

Continue on with my holiday and find the other 99% that will treat you like a king.

Either way it is a good story to share and you were honest about what went down in this crappy situation.

Amazing story. I don't think I would even followed her out of the room, but rather headed straight for the club and complained.

I get the sense that Thai officials are wide open for negotiation. On my last trip I had to pay customs duty on something that I brought to Thailand. I forget if it was 3 or 4K baht. After questioning the amount the officer dropped it to 2K and I countered with 1K; and that's what I paid.
Perhaps you should have countered with 500.

Maybe the cop felt that way too...?

I am "familiar" with Thailand, and understand the corruption and power trip rules here with persons of authority. My point was that I was not afraid of the trouble.... as long as I, the gogo girl, AND, most likely, the cop knew that it was me that was telling the real truth...

I also "know", especially now, that the cops/authorities are not going to deport or send to jail a cooperative foreigner over evidence as shaky as a gogo girl's contested testimony.

And, just a reminder, the trouble found me, not vice versa.

I think that this is really the point to be learned here. Being in the right is not good enough. When you get physical with somebody, then that becomes the # 1 issue the cops look at, not who is right or who is wrong. They don't see being right as sufficient justification for the use of force, even when the person is ripping you off for $45.

That can be a little hard to appreciate, when you are someone who gets caught up on the principle of the matter. I know, because that is the way I am.

I once found myself in front of a kangaroo police court in the Patong station, faced with a half-dozen lying Thais on the other side of it, all blabbing away in Thai, as I tried to defend myself in my extremely limited rudimentary Thai. I really think that everyone there knew that I was telling the truth. The officer acting as judge was about to rule against me, saying how could he believe me when there was one of me and so many of them. He wanted me to pay a large fine, but I flat out refused, and said that they should be made to pay me damages. Then I said, in Thai, that I wanted an attorney(thanai kwaam), and he hesitated. By the time we had that sorted out, he was called away by more urgent business, and his sargeant took over as judge. I had ridden with him back and forth to the scene of the incident twice, when the previous judge sent us to look for more witnesses. In his truck, I chatted him up in Thai. Are you married? How's the wife? How many kids? Boys or girls? How old? Like working in Patong? We got on quite well. So when he took over, things began to shift in my favor. The fine kept getting lower. Still I refused. Then there was to be no fine. Not good enough for me. Finally, I was offered a small sum to cover the doctor bill. I still refused to accept that, unless it was accompanied by an apology. For awhile, it seemed as if we were at an impasse. I refused to budge. Finally, I got the apology, then we all piled into the sargeant's pickup, me in the front with him, and them in the back and went to the hospital where I was treated for my injuries, and they had to wait and pay the bill when I was released. The sargeant saw to that, then we were all free to go, and he gave me a ride back to my hotel.

You realize that he could have booked you for prostitution right there ?? And held you for a court appearance and / or without bail..

After 2 days without a shower or food or access to a phone.. How much would you have paid to be let out.. 50k ?? 100k ??

They know that..It was all well within thier powers.. Wouldnt even make an expat raise his eyebrows..

Personally I think what you did was dumber than a bag of rocks (no offence intended).. But it seems you lucked out.. Very lucky she didnt have a co-operative copepr that she gave freebies to or split fines with (many do) one phone call and a second MiB coming in with a wink to the first / desk sarge and it would have been hellish.

Not trying to get the last words in here and this will be my last post on this thread, but I still don't think I got lucky at all.

It is somewhat easy to play Monday morning quarmassageplanet.netack while watching the films with hindsight, or to sit behind a keyboard punching out advice during lunchtime on what you think is the best way to handle the situation (when you are not in it). But, in the heat of the moment, and when a crime is in progress, your instincts will take over. I know this because I would have also previously advised to just walk away over $45. Not worth the risk...

However when in the situation at the police station, as long as the situation is not escalating and the cops are not getting flak, then they are reasonable. I kept my composure and remained friendly, and so did they. I knew it was just a shakedown at that point, and was just trying to lower bail. I know two cops from the Phuket Gym that I see out on the job from time to time over the years. Put them in street/gym clothes and they are as happy go lucky as the next bar girl. I also dated the sister of one for a little while. Same attitude. But, put two inch boots under their feet, stuff them in a too tight uniform and wrap a gun around their waste and their expressions and attitudes change.

The horror stories you hear about Thai police are most likely produced by the farang that were drunk, obnoxious and condescending to the police in their incidents. I certainly was not.

So, now, looking back on the incident, the only thing different I would do is make a counter-offer, rather than just refuse to pay.

Call me a slow learner if you like, but I lowered the bail, the cop got 500 bt and the girl got 500 bt, plus bar fine for four/five hours of her time (that's what I would call dumber than a bag of rocks).

Again, appreciate all feedback.

BTW to one BM, if I am not safe from myself in Bangkok, then why would I be safe from myself back home? I did get on a plane though, just to Phuket...

Monkeyhouse, Thailand deportation and permanent red carded, 100k squeeze, a nice backroom hiding, all of these things are highly possible and 5 hours in a cop shop got you a 1000 baht improvement.

You say instinct takes over.. I say you have a very western instinct that justice prevails.. My self preservation instinct would not have let be get in handcuffs or the cop shop.. It can all spiral out of control so quickly from there.

I can see both sides of it. On the one hand, the logical thing to do is let her go, don't risk trouble, because you never know how it might escalate, and where it might end up. But, on the other hand, as you say, in the heat of the moment, it is really not the money. It is the shock to your system when someone has the nerve to treat you that way. Every bone in your body says, "I'm not going to allow it." Then it becomes your will against their will. It's like a game of "chicken," seeing who will break first, and how far you will go to win the test of wills.

Once the battle of wills commences, then money has very little to do with it


To me, that would be the main thing right there, and I may have sat in police station a few hours more just to ruin her night, and make the point that she is not going to get away with robbery quite so easily.

In that regard, I thank you for your efforts on behalf of all us farang guys, who might just BF this girl some day without knowing any better. She won't be quite so quick next time to rip some guy off, now that she sees she might only end up with 500 Baht for the night, when she more easily could have earned the 1700 Baht.


This is hard to fathom. After all the shit you went through over the principle of the matter, it simply amazes me that you did not go back to the bar and get the BF back.

The only 2 times I have ever demanded a refund of a BF were both when the girl pulled a runner on me. That girl not only pulled a runner on you, but ran off with your money, as well, thereby adding insult to injury, and then, on top of it all, poured gas on the fire by having the absolute nerve to summon the MIB, claiming that you ripped her off. If that is not worth a full refund, then I don't know what is!

Huge mistake to pay in advance (especially with someone you hardly know), this ain't the way the system works in Thailand so why change it ?

A good hotel will keep the girls ID card and they will call up to the room before they release it.

So you could just say she stole money and ran. Let them threaten to call the police. Keep your hands cleaner.
