ASET Reflexology Diploma Level 4

Hi Everyone.

Newbie saying hello.

I am half way through a 7 week basic reflexology course, 1 night aweek at night school.
Picking it up fairly quickly, teacher is really good, I am the only male in a group of twelve, the ladies are great and really make me feel welcome, just the other night the teacher took me to one side and said I were her star pupil, it took awhile for my head to unswell LOL.

Anyway what I would like to ask, as anybody been on one of the home study courses, Aset reflexology diploma level 4.
Been reading through the details and seems quite good, as I am already learning the practical side at nightschool I feel I could probably do this.

Would love to hear from anyone who as done these courses and recommends them.

Hi Steve

Please forgive me if I sound a bit negative but this kind of course drives me insane! I spent well over a year training to be a reflexologist and did the AoR course which included tons of theory and practical work and over 80 case/client studies.
I really don't see how this would enable you to get the right training and knowledge to practice with paying clients and I also don't know how you would stand with insurance either.
If I were you I would look for an accredited course such as the AoR or ITEC - it may take a while longer to qualify but iMHO it would give you the hands on training needed.

ps this isnt a dig at this particular course [ which, incidentally I have never heard of] but any home study/distance learning courses.

At the moment I am learning basic reflexology at night school, but would like to go on to do a diploma, not actually on one yet...

There are so many different courses to choose from, it is very hard to know where to start..

I think what Steve is suggesting is that he is enjoying his basic reflexology course so much that he wishes to take it further, for example distant learning with a ASET level 4 diploma.

My advice to you Steve is do a proper attendance course at a college not a distant learning course as they are a waste of time and money. Even though AoR or ITEC qualifications are level 3, they are professional courses lending to professional status and are very insurable.

Here's a strange reality in the UK: more and more people are studying complementary therapies at university (i.e. reflexology) at levels 4 and 5, yet students still have to do level 3 professional exams if they wish to be serious professional practitioners.

As a training provider working with ASET, I can give you some feedback on who they are. They are one of the biggest QCA awarding bodies in the UK, offering a vast number of qualifications.

Any training provider wishing to work with ASET will have to go through a rigorous application and approval process, which in essence gives them a quality mark if they are approved.

I can say that we have approval from many different awarding bodies, ITEC being one, and ASET approval was one of the toughest to get.

It took us almost a year to get a level 4 accredited course approved, and even longer for level 5.

I do feel though, looking around, that there are courses approved for their academic content, without looking at the need for hands on practical training. I can see that ASET have approved quite a lot of these courses.

My advice would be as Reiki Pixie has said, if you want to learn hands on therapies, do a hands on course. Distance learning can be great for learning theory, but thats it, you need practical training too.

(the other unfortunate thing, to pick up on what Delores said, you can get insured for distance learning only courses, which I find quite scary!)

It can be very confusing, level 4 is indeed considered to be foundation or uni level, which can be misleading, in particular when you look at what you end up with. Many people who try homestudy finish feeling they cannot start practice as they lack the practical skills and confidence.

I would certainly advise that you go to a school or college and undetake formal face to fae training, as much for the sharing of treatments, ideas and support as anything. This should prepare you more fully for the real world and the reality of being a reflexologist.

i teach intro courses to ITEC massage and reflexology.

i'm good at what i do and my students learn alot from the courses (run over 10 weeks usually, 20 learning hours) BUT it is emphasised, this is intrduction only and practise should only be on family and friends.

its sometimes difficult knowing the cut off point of what to teach... just teaching the basic massage strokes would be very dull, so i do teach routines. mind you, its a very basic routine and whilst it could be accepted professionally, with the amount of supervised practise we do in class, there is no way it should be. a fine line!

i have to bear in mind that some students come just to learn for interest only so i want them to enjoy the sessions and take a basic skill away with them.

i would say you need far more hands on practise than my courses offer, to feel confident and professional to take yourself to the paying public.

enjoy the intro course, take what you learn, store it away for the future and enrol on a course that offers hands on teaching! (btw, i've done distant learning courses in the past and was ok, because i had a good basic bodywork background - they'd be near on impossible otherwise).
